The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak affected the epidemiology and outcomes of Out-Of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA). We performed a retrospective observational study in Western district Vicenza (Veneto, Italy) to evaluate patients by non-traumatic OHCA we analyzed epidemiological clinical characteristics associated with sustained Return Of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC). coll...
This issue's Recently published papers commentary considers the popular and muddy waters of glycaemic control, stops briefly to ponder the incidence of pulmonary embolus in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, promotes novel studies in the areas of traumatic brain injury and extracorporeal circuits, and rounds off with a potentially dogma-challenging study in cardiac ar...
Traumatic cardiac arrest resuscitation is considered a heroic and futile endeavor. However, newer articles have more promising statistics and divide between prehospital ground and helicopter transport. Here we discuss why there might be a difference in the survivability of this subset of trauma patients.
Therapeutic hypothermia, an intervention reducing core body temperature below 35 degrees Celsius, has gained popularity in the management of acute brain injury after a series of small clinical trials in patients following cardiac arrest, stroke and traumatic brain injury. This article reviews the evidence relating to therapeutic hypothermia as an intervention in acute injury.
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy of open chest cardiac compressions for the resuscitation of pre-hospital cardiac arrest patients presenting with non-shockable rhythms on arrival at the emergency department. DESIGN Prospective observational study of outcomes and physiological parameters during open chest cardiac compressions for non-traumatic pre-hospital cardiac arrest. SETTING Large ac...
Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a life-saving procedure used to control bleeding and maintain blood pressure temporarily in traumatic hemorrhagic shock. Uterine rupture and placenta accreta provoke uncontrollable massive hemorrhaging. REBOA may be useful for hemodynamic stabilization to prevent cardiac arrest in high-risk pregnancy.
The only peer-reviewed journal exploring all aspects of this innovative new technology for critical care situations. The Journal provides a multidisciplinary forum to ensure that therapeutic hypothermia is well understood and used to improve patient outcomes in cardiac arrest, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, stroke, myocardial ischemia, and other emergency situations.
OBJECTIVE Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) may be considered as a rescue therapy for patients with refractory cardiac arrest. Identifying patients who might benefit from this potential life-saving procedure is crucial for implementation of ECPR. The objective of this study was to estimate the number of patients who fulfilled a hypothetical set of ECPR criteria and to evaluate...
INTRODUCTION The safety of arterial hyperoxia is under increasing scrutiny. We performed a systematic review of the literature to determine whether any association exists between arterial hyperoxia and mortality in critically ill patient subsets. METHODS Medline, Thomson Reuters Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched from inception to June 2014. Observational or interventional stud...
