The histological appearances in 85 peroral small intestinal biopsies from children have been analysed quantitatively by the method of Dunnill and Whitehead (1972). As applied to such biopsy specimens, this technique provides indices of both the mucosal volume and of the mucosal surface-to-volume ratio. When compared with controls, ;flat' biopsies from children with untreated coeliac disease inv...

Beginning with Gee's7 mention of atrophy of glandular crypts in 1888, many investigators of idiopathic sprue agreed that the significant changes in the small bowel at autopsy consisted of mucosal and villous atrophy, edema, and chronic mucosal inflammation and ulceration. Later, these observations were dismissed by Thaysene as due to post-mortem autolysis. According to Suarez et al.,' Koppisch ...

Introduction Celiac disease (CD) is defined by gluten-induced immune-mediated enteropathy, affecting approximately 1% of the genetically predisposed population. The immunologic response to gluten causes characteristic intestinal alterations with gradual development. Histologic recovery of intestinal architecture was reported to occur within 6-12 months after starting a gluten-free diet, simulta...

Intestinal biopsies were performed in 31 infants with cow's milk protein intolerance. Mucosal damage was constant, partial villous atrophy being the most usual finding. Though these changes are nonspecific, small intestinal biopsy can be a useful investigation in these patients. With a milk-free diet, recovery of normal mucosal appearence is reached between 3 and 13 months.

Celiac disease (CD) is a systemic, immune-mediated disorder that primarily affect small intestine and triggered by dietary gluten in genetically susceptible individuals. Gluten is a water insoluble protein complex, which is found in wheat, rye and barley. A significant finding of celiac disease is villous atrophy of small intestine which leads to nutrient malabsorption and broad range of clinic...

Cellobiose and mannitol absorption were studied in patients with suspected abnormal function of the small bowel mucosa. The urinary cellobiose:mannitol ratio was increased in subtotal villous atrophy, iron deficiency anaemia, and small intestinal Crohn's disease. The test seems a sensitive indicator of the integrity of small bowel mucosa.

A pair of monozygous twins concordant for both duodenojejunal villous atrophy and dermatitis herpetiformis are described, the first example to be reported in the literature. The observation provides strong support for the concept of an underlying genetic component being involved in the pathogenesis of these two conditions.

BACKGROUND Studies have demonstrated that villous atrophy in celiac disease is patchy and have suggested that duodenal bulb biopsies aid in diagnosis. OBJECTIVE To determine the role of the addition of duodenal bulb biopsies to distal duodenum (D2) biopsies in the diagnosis of celiac disease. DESIGN Prospective, case-control study. SETTING Tertiary referral hospital. PATIENTS Patients u...
