It is common sense that costs and benefits should be carefully weighed before deciding on a course of action. However, we often disapprove of people who do so, even when their actual decision benefits us. For example, we prefer people who directly agree to do us a favor over those who agree only after securing enough information to ensure that the favor will not be too costly. Why should we car...
Educational tracking seeks to group students by unobserved ability using measures of observable acquired skills. In a model where individuals have differential skills prior to beginning formal education due to differences in early childhood development (e.g. linguistic, cultural, or nutritional disadvantages), we show that color-blind tracking systematically underplaces minorities. As a result,...
In this chapter we review recent advances in space-time processing techniques for wireless communication systems. Our emphasis is on blind methods for channel identiication and signal demodulation for the receive problem. We focus mainly on the multiple user problem and provide an in-depth discussion of several approaches for exploiting signal structure in order to recover the user signals.
One must sometimes follow the evolution of several individuals that cannot be distinguished. The author proposes a graphical estimator of individual evolution that can be used in such cases. She shows that this estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal.
This work builds on an existing performance modeling framework that has been proven effective on a variety of HPC systems. This paper will illustrate the framework’s power by creating blind predictions for three systems as well as establishing sensitivity studies to advance understanding of observed and anticipated performance of both architecture and application. The predictions are termed bli...
