Owing to the attitude that a high intake of fluid enhances beauty, young women may drink far more water than they need. This behaviour may have serious consequences for the mother and her offspring during delivery because of a risk of severe hyponatraemia. In contrast, hypernatraemic dehydration in the newborn infant may be considered when exclusively breast-fed infants postnatally lose 10% or ...

The U.S. Army's fluid replacement guidelines emphasize fluid replacement during hot weather training to prevent degradation of performance and minimize the risk of heat injury. Little consideration has been given, however, to possible overhydration and development of water intoxication. Sufficient epidemiological evidence is available to demonstrate an increasing incidence of water intoxication...

Nutmeg ingestion in large amounts can cause toxic symptoms such as hallucinations, tachycardia and anticholinergic effects. We describe a case of a 37-year-old woman who experienced an unintentional autointoxication of nutmeg. It is likely that nutmeg intoxication is underreported. We suggest to specifically think of nutmeg ingestion in case of symptoms as mentioned above.

Mannitol and frusemide were compared in a randomized, controlled, double-blind trial for their effects in promoting diuresis after prostatectomy and on indices of water intoxication. The drugs had comparable diuretic effects. Sodium loss was greater with frusemide, contributing to sodium depletion after operation. Administration of frusemide was associated with more frequent need for i.v. volum...

We report a rare case of serious voluntary intoxication by laboratory thallium monobromate combined with alcohol intake by a 24-years old man. The diagnosis of thallium intoxication was based on history, nonspecific but typical clinical symptoms including gastrointestinal complaints, painful polyneuropathy, alopecia, and confirmed by the finding of increased thallium concentration in the urine....

VASELINE oil intoxication is a known cause of exogenous lipoid pneumonia. Vaseline oil is a mixture of saturated aliphatic (C14–C18) and cyclic hydrocarbons that is insoluble in water and, in the alveolar space, activates an acute inflammatory response with edema and interstitial fibrosis. Because the hydrocarbons cannot be metabolized in humans, the therapy consists of limiting or decreasing t...
