This paper examines sources and contributions of friction in heavy-duty diesel engines. Current and past work done on the characterization of diesel engine friction will be reviewed. It is also a goal to analyze each component system from a basic mechanics viewpoint highlighting some of the key friction producing phenomena. Different regimes of lubricated friction will be illustrated using a ge...

FRICTION AND LUBRICATION in sheet metal forming are influenced by such parameters as material properties, surface finish, temperature, sliding velocity, contact pressure, and lubricant characteristics. The parameters that affect friction and lubrication are schematically shown in Fig. 7.1. Depending on these parameters, the performance of a lubricant and the coefficient of friction (COF) vary. ...

BACKGROUND There is limited information regarding the mechanical factors contributing to the progression of posterior tibial tendon dysfunction. Therefore, an investigation of the mechanical forces on the posterior tibial tendon may improve our understanding of this pathology. METHODS The gliding resistance and excursion of the posterior tibial tendon in the retromalleolar region was measured...

Cold rolling of steel is one of the most important metal forming processes so an accurate control of its parameters during the process is necessary. In this paper, the friction coefficient has been proposed as a function of cold rolling parameters such as forward slip, forward and backward tensile stresses ,strip thickness, static deformation, resistance of strip before and after rolling ,strip...

In this note, it is shown that the differential equation with discontinuous right-hand side, which describes the dynamic behavior of a mechanical system with friction, has a Carathèodory solution. This result supports theoretically the prior work on the control of mechanical systems with friction, which assumes the existence of Carathèodory solutions without proof.

One of the ultimate goals in landslide hazard assessment is to predict maximum landslide extension and velocity. Despite much work, the physical processes governing energy dissipation during these natural granular flows remain uncertain. Field observations show that large landslides travel over unexpectedly long distances, suggesting low dissipation. Numerical simulations of landslides require ...

In the present work the influence of a LuGre type friction law [cf. to C. Canudas de Wit, H. Olsson, K.J. Aström, P. Lischinsky, A new model for control of systems with friction, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control 40 (1995) 419] on the fundamental mechanisms resulting in linear instability of steady sliding in point contacts is investigated. Both a velocity-dependent kinetic friction coeffi...

Tire-road friction is estimated using the wheel-slip computed from standard sensor signals. A parametric model is estimated using an adaptive lter supported by a fault detector. Results from extensive eld trials are presented. An approach to estimate the tire{road friction during normal drive using only the wheel slip, that is, the relative diierence in wheel velocities, is presented. The drive...

Electrophoretic mobility is the most important parameter governing the separation of solutes in capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). Classical theoretical models for the prediction of absolute mobilities consider only the effect of hydrodynamic friction. Application of these models to literature mobility data demonstrates that they are not appropriate for small organic solutes. Accurate predic...
