UNJ1025−0040 is a quasar at z = 0.6344 that shows an extremely bright post starburst population of age ∼ 400 Myr (Brotherton et al. 1999). Images of UNJ1025−0040 show a nearly stellar object 4. 2 SSW of the quasar. We present imaging and spectroscopy that confirm that this object is a companion galaxy at redshift z = 0.6341. We estimate an age of ∼ 800 Myr for the dominant stellar population in...

We report the discovery of LSR1610-0040, a previously unreported r = 17.5 star with a very high proper motion μ = 1.46 yr. This very cool star (b−i=6.3) is found to have a peculiar spectrum that does not fit into the standard sequence of late-M dwarfs and L dwarfs. Rather, the spectrum is more typical of an ultra-cool subdwarf, with weak bands of TiO and no detectable VO. But because LSR1610-00...

The staphylococcal cfr gene mediates resistance to phenicols, lincosamides, oxazolidinones, pleuromutilins, and streptogramin A, a phenotype that has been termed PhLOPS(A). The cfr gene has mainly been associated with coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates from animals, and only a few cfr-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates have been described so far. This s...

BACKGROUND Hypophosphatasia results from mutations in the gene for the tissue-nonspecific isozyme of alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP). Inorganic pyrophosphate accumulates extracellularly, leading to rickets or osteomalacia. Severely affected babies often die from respiratory insufficiency due to progressive chest deformity or have persistent bone disease. There is no approved medical therapy. ENB-...

We report the discovery of 105-ms X-ray pulsations from the compact central object (CCO) in the supernova remnant Kes 79 using data acquired with the Newton X-Ray Multi-Mirror Mission. Two observations of the pulsar taken 6 days apart yield an upper limit on its spin-down rate of Ṗ < 7 × 10 s s and no evidence for binary orbital motion. The implied energy loss rate is Ė < 2 × 10 ergs s, surface...

We have used the Very Large Telescope (VLT) to obtain spectropolarimetry of the radio-loud, double-lobed broad absorption line (BAL) quasar PKS 0040−005. We find that the optical continuum of PKS 0040−005 is intrinsically polarized at 0.7% with an electric vector position angle nearly parallel to that of the large-scale radio axis. This result is naturally explained in terms of an equatorial sc...
