An efficient one-pot, three-component method for the preparation of indeno[1,2-b]quinoline-9,11(6H,10H)-dione, acridine-1,8(2H,5H)-dione and various multi-substituted quinoline-3-carbonitrile derivatives has been developed through the Michael addition to enaminones, which was achieved by both microwave irradiation and conventional heating.

We report photoluminescence (PL) modulation of quantum dots (QDs) by photoinduced electron transfers from acridine-1,8-dione derivative surface ligands. Reversible PL switching upon many repeated cycles was demonstrated, as alternating on and off of the UV excitation for the surface ligand has successfully resulted in the QD PL modulation.

A one pot domino protocol for an efficient synthesis of 7-arylbenzo[c]acridine-5,6-diones, with a novel nucleus, has been developed by reacting 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione, aromatic aldehydes and aromatic amines using environmentally benevolent p-toluene sulphonic acid as a catalyst. An exciting feature of this communication is the reaction mechanism that depends on the reaction solvent.

Among 18,424 blood culture sets processed during a study period of 18 months, 85 bottles that were positive by the BacT/ALERT system were Gram stain negative. Both acridine orange staining and subcultures detected microorganisms in a total of 12 bottles. Acridine orange staining can replace subcultures of false-positive blood cultures.
