The adenohypophysis consists of at least six different cell types, somatotropes, lactotropes, thyrotropes, melanotropes, corticotropes, and gonadotropes. In mouse, cloning of spontaneous mutations and gene targeting has revealed multiple genes required for different steps of adenohypophysis development. Here, we report the results of a systematic search for genes required for adenohypophysis fo...

BACKGROUND Apoptosis is involved in fundamental processes of life, like embryonic development, tissue homeostasis, or immune defense. Defects in apoptosis cause or contribute to developmental malformation, cancer, and degenerative disorders. METHODS The developing adenohypophysis area of rat fetuses was studied at the embryonic stage 13.5 (gestational day) for apoptotic and proliferative cell...

The adenohypophysis contains high-affinity binding sites for antidiabetic sulfonylureas that are specific blockers of ATP-sensitive K+ channels. The binding protein has a M(r) of 145,000 +/- 5000. The presence of ATP-sensitive K+ channels (26 pS) has been demonstrated by electrophysiological techniques. Intracellular perfusion of adenohypophysis cells with an ATP-free medium to activate ATP-sen...

Expression of leptin receptor (LR) and suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS)-3 genes was investigated in normal-fed and fasted cows. Fasting did not affect LR mRNA, but increased SOCS-3 mRNA in the adenohypophysis, suggesting that heightened responsiveness of fasted cows to leptin is not dependent upon alterations in LR or SOCS-3 mRNA in the adenohypophysis.

The purpose of this study was to characterize testicular development in D'Man ram lambs, focusing primarily on androgen receptors (ARs) immunolocalization in the adenohypophysis and testis that is not still known in the D'Man ram lamb. Lambs (n = 12) were divided into four groups (three lambs per group). Adenohypophysis and testis were fixed and paraffin embedded; cross-section (3 μm) were stai...

The pituitary gland is composed of the adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis. The adenohypophysis contains endocrine cells, folliculo-stellate (FS) cells, and marginal layer cells, whereas the neurohypophysis mainly comprises axons and pituicytes. To understand the molecular nature of water transfer in the pituitary gland, we examined the immunohistochemical localization of the membrane water cha...

introduction: it is well known that glycoconjugates on the cell surface of embryonic cells as well as extracellular matrix (ecm) are involved in many developmental phenomena including cell differentiation and maturation. these molecular events have not received proper attention during pituitary cell differentiation. the purpose of this study was to investigate glycoconjugate distribution on cel...

Congenital abnormalities of the pituitary gland are rare and may be associated with midline cranial, orbital, and facial anomalies and with hormonal insufficiency. Here we report a case of asymptomatic, abnormal migration of the adenohypophysis. The normally developed adenohypophysis was located in the sphenoid bone and developed on the intersphenoidal septum, extending from the superior pharyn...

The current investigation was undertaken to study whether mammalian prolactin can induce mitotic activity in the anterior pituitary gland in chicks. It was found that intramuscular injections of ovine prolactin (1.5 i.u. and 10 i.u. each daily per bird for 10 days) significantly increased mitotic frequency in the adenohypophysis of juvenile cockerels. It is suggested that ovine prolactin has a ...
