The effects of a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), on the gelation of methylcellulose (MC) in aqueous solutions have been investigated by micro differential scanning calorimetry (micro DSC) and rheology. Methylcellulose had a weight average molecular weight of 310,000 and a degree of substitution of 1.8. The concentration of MC was kept at 0.5 wt % (0.016 mM) and 1 wt ...

Gold nanorods are a promising nanoscale material in clinical diagnosis and treatment. The physicochemical properties of GNRs, including size, shape and surface features, are crucial factors affecting their cytotoxicity. In this study, we investigated the effects of different aspect ratios and surface modifications on the cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of GNRs in cultured cells and in mice. Th...

Formation and electronic excitation energy transfer process in the nanosystem consisting of Ce0.85Tb0.15F3 nanoparticles, cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant, and chlorin e6 photosensitizer were studied. It was shown that chlorin e6 molecules bind to Ce0.85Tb0.15F3 NP in the presence of CTAB forming thus Ce0.85Tb0.15F3 NP-CTAB-chlorin e6 nanosystem. We consider that binding occurs via chlorin...

Tri-block copolymers (poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide), represented as EOxPOyEOx), pluronics (F127 = EO106PO70EO106, P65 = EO20PO30EO20, P85 = EO27PO39EO27, P103 = EO17PO55EO17, and P123 = EO20PO70EO20) and cationic surfactants (cethyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)), two surfactant systems, form complex micelles that self-assemble into mesostructured particles w...

The interaction between the cationic surfactant Hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulfate (bmim-octylSO4) in aqueous solution has been investigated at two total concentrations (0.5 and 10 mM) and different CTAB mole fractions (CTAB). Samples of different physical appearance were obtained depending on CTAB suggesting different kind...

In this study, the performance and stability of inverted bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells (PSCs) is enhanced by doping zinc oxide (ZnO) with 0-6 wt % cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in the sol-gel ZnO precursor solution. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the optimized 3 wt % CTAB-doped ZnO PSCs was increased by 9.07%, compared to a PCE of 7.31% for the pristine ZnO dev...

A new approach involving the introduction of the common cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) for modifying a rutile TiO2 film during its formation from hydrolyzed TiCl4 solution has been adopted, intending to improve the photoelectrochemical properties of the pertinent dye-sensitized solar cell. CTAB-routed films were found to consist of smaller clusters of near-spherical T...

The membrane protein CtaB in S. aureus is a protoheme IX farnesyltransferase involved in the synthesis of the heme containing terminal oxidases of bacterial respiratory chain. In this study, to assess the role of CtaB in S. aureus virulence, pigment production, and persister formation, we constructed a ctaB mutant in the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strain USA500. We found...

We demonstrate a CTAB-templated approach towards direct coating of mesoporous titania on gold nanorods in aqueous solutions. The formation of the mesoporous shell is found to be closely correlated with CTAB concentration and the amount of the titania precursor. This approach can be readily extended to form mesoporous titania shells on other CTAB-capped nanoparticles.

The aim of this study was the preparation of polyethylene oxide (PEO)/clay nanocomposites using organoclay produced via micellar adsorption of cethyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and their characterisation by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, and the investigation of certain mechanical properties of the composites. The results show that the basal dista...
