The debate as to whether language influences cognition has been long standing but yielded conflicting findings across domains such colour and kinship categories. Fewer studies have investigated systems nominal classification (gender, classifiers) different languages examine the effects of linguistic categorisation on cognition. Text categorisation is challenging, due to the complex structure with heterogeneous, changing topics in documents. The performance of text categorisation relies on the quality of samples, effectiveness of document features, and the topic coverage of categories, depending on the employing strategies; supervised or unsupervised; single labelled or multi-labelled. Attempting to deal with these rel...

Disorders provide an important source of information in developing theories of normal categorisation. Disruption in categorisation in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia has been widely evidenced. However, findings are often contradictory and subject to significant confounds. In the present study 35 high schizotypes and 35 low scorers completed a semantic categorisation task and a borderli...

Background: Text categorisation has been used in bioinformatics to help identify documents containing protein-protein interactions. Standard text categorisation methods have used the bag-of-words approach with little input from NLP. While this has proved effective in the past, there is some evidence that the techniques are not adequate in some biological domains. Here we examine how chunking, n...

Categorisation is an inherent feature of much individual and collective work. Filing, coding, sorting, collating and comparing inevitably rely on schemes by which items can be categorised. Technical systems introduce a range of mechanisms for categorisation, from simple file systems to intricate database technologies, and these systems are deployed into settings in which categorisation work is ...

The current work sought to test the moderating role of a multicultural ideology on the relationship between categorisation salience and ingroup bias. Accordingly, in one experimental study, we manipulated categorisation salience and the accessibility of a multicultural ideology, and measured intergroup attitudes. Results show that categorisation salience only leads to ingroup bias when a multic...

We introduce a shape categorisation method for architectural drawings that takes shape characteristics derived from those drawings as features. We propose a feature-based shape analysis procedure and a formal model of shape categorisation based upon the measurement of featural similarity of shapes. Shape categorisation is demonstrated in experiments on architectural drawings.

We take a social neuroscience approach to self and social categorisation in which the current self-categorisation(s) is constructed from relatively stable identity representations stored in memory (such as the significance of one’s social identity) through iterative and interactive perceptual and evaluative processing. This approach describes these processes across multiple levels of analysis, ...
