pond aquaculture is the most significant fish production method in central europe, approximately 70% of the total fish production is originated from traditional fish ponds in this region, which is a resource-saving, ecologically sustainable production method. however, the growth of this sector is not expected because of the low production capacity of valuable fish species and the relatively hig...

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of artificial feed and adding organic manures to the earthen ponds on the growth and body composition of genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT). A total of 160 fish were stocked in each of the two ponds for 90 days. Fish in both ponds were fed with supplementary feed containing 30% crude protein at 4% body weight. Pond 1 was fertilized using co...

The study evaluated the status of fish pond projects initiated in the 1980s on resource-poor farms in Guatemala and Panama. In both places, the host country and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provided financial assistance and Auburn University provided technical support to the respective governments. The study examined the impact of aquaculture technology, extens...

Decision support systems (DSSs) are potentially valuable tools for assessing the economic and ecological impacts of alternative decisions on aquaculture production. This report discusses the latest design, functional modules, and application areas of POND©, a decision tool that has been developed to allow analysis of pond aquaculture facilities by the use of a combination of simulation models a...

The copepod Diaptomus sanguineus begins diapause in permanent ponds in late March as an adaptation to avoid summer fish predation. During a study of copepod populations in two Rhode Island ponds, a severe drought dried one pond killing all fish. The second (control) pond did not dry, and no fish were killed. Before the drought copepods in the two ponds entered diapause on nearly the same date. ...

The experiment was conducted in two earthen ponds to investigate the body composition, and fatty acid profile of carps along with growth performance by using rice polish as fish feed with urea and ammonium nitrate fertilization of pond. Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), Rohu (Labeo rohita) and Mori (Cirrhinus mrigala) were stocked in the ratio of 1:2:1 respectively with total number of...

The influence of environmental complexity on brain development has been demonstrated in a number of taxa, but the potential influence of social environment on neural architecture remains largely unexplored. We investigated experimentally the influence of social environment on the development of different brain parts in geographically and genetically isolated and ecologically divergent populatio...

The North American freshwater sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus (Centrarchidae), was found in a pond outside Oslo, Norway in October 2005. The large number of fish (>100) in the pond suggests successful reproduction. Two monogenean parasites, nonnative to Norway, were found on the gill filaments of the fish. The origin of the fish and associated parasites is not known.
