One hundred and thirty-one consecutive requests for thyroid scintigraphy were analysed to assess their diagnostic contribution to the subsequent medical management of the patient. Forty one per cent of requests were to investigate the presence of a clinically detectable solitary nodule and, of these, one fifth had hot nodules. Diffuse goitres accounted for 38% of all referrals, but in only two ...

A 44-year-old euthyroid woman had two palpable nodules in the thyroid gland. 123I thyroid scintigraphy showed a hot nodule in the right lobe and a cold one in the left lobe. Total thyroidectomy was performed, and histopathologic examination revealed that both tumors contained papillary carcinoma. Thus, hot nodules on a thyroid scintigram with 123I do not necessarily preclude malignancy.

UNLABELLED The malignancy risk is low in hot thyroid nodules verified by scintigraphy. We present a rare case of papillary carcinoma, initially treated as an autonomous hot nodule. Case report. A 36-year old male patient with a hot thyroid nodule and subclinical hyperthyroidism was treated with 10mCi 131 I. On admission, both 99mTc and 131 I thyroid scintigraphic imaging revealed a hot nodule a...

Objective: To evaluate the contribution of 131I scintigraphy and ultrasonography to the prediction of malignancy in thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology in euthyroid patients. Subjects and methods: The sample consisted of 102 patients with thyroid nodules, submitted to FNAC and presenting an indeterminate cytological diagnosis (follicular neoplasm). Results: Malignancy was observed in 19...

BACKGROUND A diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis is readily considered when patients present with a particular set of typical clinical characteristics. Subacute thyroiditis sometimes presents as a solitary cold nodule; however, the presence of a hot nodule in patients with subacute thyroiditis is exceedingly rare. CASE PRESENTATION Here, the case of a 57-year-old woman complaining of pain in th...

Background: Although thyroid nodules are less common in children and adolescents, the malignancy rate for nodules is higher among children and adolescents than adults. A nodule that is discovered in a patient presenting with hyperthyroidism is usually a benign nodule or benign toxic adenoma and, thus, nodules are biopsied only infrequently. Objective: To report a case of papillary thyroid carci...

A patient initially presented with an autonomously functioning right thyroid nodule and transient hyperthyroidism which lasted for a few months. Several months after resolution of thyrotoxicosis, the patient had a recurrent episode of hyperthyroidism and was found to have a left hot nodule. The right hyperfunctioning nodule had become cold on scintigraphy, and its aspiration revealed haemorrhag...
