Conflicting data exist regarding the anatomical relationship of the saphenous and infrapatellar nerves at the adductor canal and the location of the superior foramen of the canal. Therefore, the authors performed a cadaveric study to detail the relationship and course of the saphenous and infrapatellar nerves and the level of the superior foramen of the canal. The adductor canal and subsartoria...

Both lower extremities of 10 cadavers (20 specimens) were dissected to delineate the course of the saphenous nerve and its two major divisions (sartorial and infrapatellar branches). The course of the saphenous nerve followed the standard text description, except at the point in the sartorius muscle where the infrapatellar branch exited to become a subcutaneous structure. The location of this b...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Successful blockade of the saphenous nerve using surface landmarks can be challenging. We evaluated the anatomic basis of performing a saphenous nerve block with ultrasound (US) using its relationship to the saphenous branch of descending genicular artery, sartorius muscle, and the adductor hiatus as defined by cadaveric measurements. METHODS Using a total of 9 cadav...

OBJECTIVE To present 2 cases of entrapment of the saphenous nerve at the adductor canal affecting the infrapatellar branch, and to provide insight into the utilization of nerve tension testing for the diagnosis of nerve entrapments in a clinical setting. RATIONALE Saphenous nerve entrapments are a very rare condition within today's body of literature, and the diagnosis remains controversial. ...

Background: Injury to the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve (IPBSN) is common after arthroscopic ACLreconstruction with hamstring tendon autograft, as reported in up to 88% of the cases. Due to close relationshipbetween the IPBSN with pes anserine tendons insertion skin incision may sever IPBSN while harvesting gracillis andsemitendinous tendons. As the IPBSN course at the anterior of...

Persistent anterior knee pain, especially after surgery, can be very frustrating for the patient and the clinician. Injury to the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve (IPS) is not uncommon after knee surgeries and trauma, yet the diagnosis and treatment of IPS neuralgia is not usually taught in pain training programs. In this case report, we describe the anatomy of the saphenous nerve an...

The authors report a case of an angioleiomyoma at the anteromedial side of the knee mimicking a neurinoma of the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve. Angioleiomyomas are benign soft tissue tumors with a predilection for the lower extremities in middle-aged females. Paroxysmal pain is triggered by pressure, cold and hormonal changes. Simple excision is usually curative.
