Report of a case of miyasis in Lucilia sericata infected wounds recently observed in Paris in a 67-year-old vagrant. The authors describe the role played by Lucilia sericata in therapy before the appearance of sulfanilamides and antibiotics.

In this work an attempt was performed to investigate the in vitro ability of Lucilia sericata maggots to control fungi involved in superficial fungal infections. A novel GFP-modified yeast culture to enable direct visualization of the ingestion of yeast cells by maggot larvae as a method of control was used. The obtained results showed that the GFP-modified yeasts were successfully ingested by ...

Merino sheep, which were hand jetted with ivermectin jetting fluid, and untreated sheep were challenged with larval implants of Lucilia cuprina, Lucilia sericata, Calliphora nociva and Chrysomya rufifacies at intervals of about 2 weeks from 6 to 16 weeks after treatment. Both Lucilia species produced strike rates of about 90% in untreated sheep; the respective rates were lower for Chr rufifacie...

The ability of three commercially available trap types to catch Lucilia (Diptera: Calliphoridae) blowflies was assessed on three sheep farms in southwest England in 2008. The aim was to evaluate their relative value for the control of ovine cutaneous myiasis (sheep blowfly strike) on farms. There was a highly significant difference between the total number of female Lucilia caught per day by th...

lucilia sericata larva is an obligatory parasite which causes myiasis in animals and rarely in humans as an ectoparasite.it belongs to the family of arthropoda and has many forms incuding egg, larva, nymph and adult.infestation in humans and sheep occursin wounds, mouth, ear, eye, and nose.infestation with this parasite causes itching, pain, inflammation, erythema, eosinophilia and secondary  bacterial i...

myiasis is the invasion of body tissues of humans and animals by the larvae of the diptera or two-winged flies. there are only sporadic reports in the literature concerning human ear myiasis. a 62-year-old bedridden woman in an intensive care unit was examined because of her intense swollen and erythematous right ear. physical examination revealed 80 live larvae (maggots) in the posterior part ...

The blowflies Lucilia cuprina Wiedmann and Lucilia sericata Meigen (Diptera:Calliphoridae) are facultative ectoparasites of warm blooded vertebrates, particularly domestic sheep. Despite being similar in morphology and ecology, the two species and different populations of each species, are known to vary in their importance as pests in different regions of the world. To elucidate the genetic bas...

To consider the evolutionary origin of the ectoparasitic habit in the blowfly genus Lucilia (Diptera:Calliphoridae), phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequence data were performed for 10 species, including all the common Lucilia agents of myiasis, collected from Africa, Australasia, North America and Europe. Complementary genetic distance and parsimony analyses are used to consider int...

Hybrids of Lucilia sericata and Lucilia cuprina have been shown to exist in previous studies using molecular methods, but no study has shown explicitly that these hybrids can be identified morphologically. Published morphological characters used to identify L. sericata and L. cuprina were reviewed, and then scored and tested using specimens of both species and known hybrids. Ordination by multi...

We announce a draft genome sequence of a Proteus mirabilis strain derived from Lucilia sericata salivary glands. This strain is demonstrated to attract and induce oviposition by L. sericata, a common blow fly important to medicine, agriculture, and forensics. The genome sequence will help dissect interkingdom communication between the species.
