This paper describes an iterative method for factoring a polynomial that bears the same relation to Bairstow's method as the secant method in a single variable bears to Newton's method. Like the secant method, the generalized secant method requires only one function evaluation for each iteration, and like the secant method it converges to a simple factor with order (1+75)/2.
We present an algorithm for computing the dimensions of higher secant varieties of minimal orbits. Experiments with this algorithm lead to many conjectures on secant dimensions, especially of Grassmannians and Segre products. For these two classes of minimal orbits, we also point out a relation between the existence of certain codes and non-defectiveness of certain higher secant varieties.
We show that the secant variety of the Segre variety gives useful information about the geometrical structure of an arbitrary multipartite quantum system. In particular, we investigate the relation between arbitrary bipartite and three-partite entangled states and this secant variety. We also discuss the geometry of an arbitrary general multipartite state.
