The swarming phenomenon of 18 strains was tested with the intention to identify motile, swarming bacteria. Not all bacteria which are motile in liquid are able to swarm on semisolid nutrient broth, but all swarming bacteria show characteristic swarming developments, resulting in different swarming zones which could be scanned densitometrically. The densitograms are fully reproducible for the sa...

Semi-solid materials undergo strain localization and shear band formation as a result of granular nature of semi-solid deformation. In the present study, to analyze the shear localization, a unified viscoplastic constitutive model was developed for the homogeneous flow. Then, a linearized analysis of the stability performed by examining the necessary condition for the perturbation growth. For t...

We compared the eSwab system to a swab with an anaerobic transport semisolid agar system for their capacities to maintain the viability of 20 species of fastidious anaerobes inoculated on the bench and held at ambient or refrigerator temperature for 24 or 48 h. On average, both systems maintained similar viabilities among analogous groups of organisms at both temperatures, although there were q...

Escherichia coli can form linear trails and move in a flagellum-independent manner on semisolid agar containing carbon sources. Trail formation seemed to correlate with the growth speed and/or carbon metabolism. Cell morphology in linear trails changed into larger cell sizes. We speculate that the flagellum-independent trail formation is a new mechanism for migration of E. coli cells.
