Introduction: The physiological process of sternum surgical fracture consolidation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery could be prolonged by the invasion of gram-positive saprophytic bacteria which perpetuates the local inflammatory process despite the standardized aseptic and antiseptic measures in cardiac surgery. In this regard, the topical application of Vancomycin can e...

PURPOSE To determine the influence of topical vancomycin prophylaxis on the incidence of bacterial endophthalmitis in eyes with a Boston Keratoprosthesis (KPro). METHODS A retrospective chart review was performed for 255 eyes of 231 patients who received a KPro between March 1990 and December 2006. Preoperative diagnoses were burn, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP), Stevens-Johnson Syndrome...

OBJECTIVE Vancomycin is effective in reducing the risk of mediastinits and topical vancomycin has been hypothesised to give high local dose concentrations while avoiding high systemic levels, thus avoiding the risk of bacterial resistance to this second-line antibiotic. However, this theory has never been tested and the degree to which vancomycin is absorbed systemically is unknown. METHODS F...

Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain an important cause of morbidity following neurosurgical procedures despite the best medical practices. In addition, hospital infection rates are proposed as a metric for ranking hospitals safety profiles to guide medical consumerism. Recently, the use of topical vancomycin, defined as the application of vancomycin powder directly into the surgical wound, h...

OBJECT Despite many efforts at reduction, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt infections are a major cause of morbidity in shunt surgery, occurring in 5-15% of cases. To attempt to reduce the shunt infection rate at our institution, we added topical vancomycin (intrashunt and perishunt) to our existing shunt infection prevention protocol in 2012. METHODS We performed a retrospective cohort study ...

Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from the aqueous chamber of an immunodepressed patient with acute hypertensive uveitis, who developed a dark hypopyon and pigment dispersion. No extraocular septic focus was found. Treatment was successful with intravitreal vancomycin, anterior chamber irrigation with vancomycin, orally administered ciprofloxacin, and topical fortified vancomycin.

We analyzed dose-dependent effects of vancomycin on wound infection bacteria and investigated the relationship between dose and microbial imbalances in patients treated with intrawound vancomycin powder during spine surgery. Numerous trials have confirmed that using intrawound vancomycin powder during spine surgery may decrease postoperative wound infection rates. However, potential risks inclu...

INTRODUCTION We retrospectively analyzed a consecutive group of patients operated for bone tumors of extremity and pelvis who received only perioperative antibiotics (Group A) against a similar group that had additional 1 g topical vancomycin sprinkled in the wound before closure (Group B). The aim was to determine if the addition of topical vancomycin decreases the incidence of deep surgical s...

After a 1-h exposure to concentrations used for topical prophylaxis in neurosurgical procedures, bacitracin, vancomycin, and oxacillin were bactericidal against more than 90% of 48 body fluid isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci. More than 10% of isolates survived despite exposure for 4 h to concentrations of gentamicin and streptomycin greater than those employed for topical prophylaxis.
