This WIP discusses Inspire-CT, an NSFfunded, multi-institutional project that is exploring ways to share the excitement and engagement of advanced computing courses with pre-college and introductory undergraduate students. The discussion includes examples of initial educational activities and a summary of results, issues, and future plans. Index Terms – Computing education, team projects, capst...

We consider exible manufacturing systems using thèFirst Come, First Served' (FCFS or FIFO) scheduling policy at each machine. We describe and discuss in some detail simple deterministic examples which have adequate capacity but which, under FCFS, can exhibit instability: unboundedly growing WIP taking the form of a repeated pattern of behavior with the repetitions on an increasing scale.

We present a localisation component that supports the generation of cross-modal deictic expressions in the knowledge-based presentation system WIP. We deal with relative localisations (e.g., "The object to the left, of object X."), absolute localisations (e.g., "The object in the upl)er left part of the l)icture.") and corner localisations (e.g., "The object in the lower right corner of the l)i...

OBJECTIVE The Dutch Working Party on Infection Prevention (Werkgroep Infectiepreventie [WIP]) aimed to determine whether certain policies on endotracheal suctioning are better than others in terms of prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in patients receiving mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit. METHODS Publications were retrieved by a systematic search of Medline ...

This paper outlines a method of developing a fitness measure for use in a Genetic Algorithm for assessing the performance of a generic production control system. The performance criteria is based on the ability to recover from inventory variations, the ability to filter out noise, robustness to production delays, robustness to WIP information delays and selectivity.

Introduction / objectives In 2005, the Dutch Working party Infection Prevention (WIP) published, its “Measures to prevent transmission of highly resistant microorganisms (HRMO)” guidelines. These guidelines provide strict definitions for the indications and measures that have to be taken in patients with HRMO, including for cases of ESBL carriage. In this study we aim to evaluate the implementa...

This paper refers to a case study where discrete event simulation was used to size the optimal amount of WIP in a Brazilian company. The data collected were used to build a simulation model that optimized the capacity of existing buffers in the manufacturing process without any problems with customer service.
