We have studied the effect of aprotinin on blood loss and subsequent blood transfusion in 17 patients undergoing knee replacement surgery. Patients receiving aprotinin (total dose 2,000,000 kallikrein inhibiting units) received fewer units of blood than control patients (P < 0.05), although there was no significant difference in blood loss between the two groups. The study was stopped when one ...

A 12-year-old girl, who had had an above-knee amputation of the left leg for a soft tissue sarcoma six years prior to this admission, presented with syncope, angina, and signs of aortic stenosis. Echocardiography demonstrated a mass arising from the interventricular septum with obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract and aortic valve. Cardiac catheterization and angiography con-

A total of 1710 primary amputees have been studied over a 25 year period and their survival time has been calculated. These were all consecutive primary lower limb amputees admitted to the Dundee Limb Fitting Centre during the period 1965-1989. Overall, the median survival was 4 yr 9 mth for the below-knee amputee (1019 patients) and 4 yr 3 mth for the above-knee amputee (586 patients). The vas...

Results Sixty seven percent (442) were males; the age ranged from 21 to 102 years (median 63 years). Arterial ischemia was present in 28% of the patients. Among these diabetic patients 73% had hypertension and 30% were active smokers. The in-hospital mortality rate was 12%, and there was no statistically difference between patients with ischemic and non-ischemic lesions (P=0.16). Of the 576 pat...

A pilonidal sinus developed in the superio-medial aspect of the thigh of an above-knee amputee. This is an unusual site for the condition to develop. We suggest that the same aetiological factors that were responsible for the "Jeep Bottom" of World War II were also responsible for this problem in the amputation stump of a Falklands campaign casualty.

A patient with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia had several fractures of the right lower limb. An above-knee amputation was eventually performed, followed by arthrodesis of the hip. Five years later the stump became painful and swelled with dramatic rapidity. Biopsy showed that this was not due to malignant change, but that an aneurysmal bone cyst had developed in association with the fibrous dysp...

Objective: To review patient characteristics and outcomes after peripheral arterial disease (PAD)-related below-knee amputation (BKA), and identify risk factors predicting subsequent above-knee amputation (AKA). Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of 210 BKAs between May 2008 and December 2015. Results: The mean age of the study population was 66 years. Most of the patients had cardiov...

A patient with systemic manifestations of sepsis after above-knee amputation developed massive left pulmonary atelectasis and pneumonia. These persisted despite repeated bronchoscopies. At thoracotomy, 180 degrees torsion of the left lung was found. The patient improved temporarily but died later of sepsis, probably related to severe hip osteomyelitis.
