We consider an indecomposable representation of a cyclic p-group Z pr over a field of characteristic p. We show that the top degree of the corresponding ring of coinvariants is less than (r 2+3r)pr 2 . This bound also applies to the degrees of the generators for the invariant ring of the regular representation.

The matching hypothesis predicts that individuals on the dating market will assess their own self-worth and select partners whose social desirability approximately equals their own. It is often treated as well established, despite a dearth of empirical evidence to support it. In the current research, the authors sought to address conceptual and methodological inconsistencies in the extant liter...

We present an analysis of conditions under which the dynamics of a frustrated Kuramoto-or Kuramoto-Sakaguchi-model on sparse networks can be tuned to enhance synchronization. Using numerical optimization techniques, linear stability, and dimensional reduction analysis, a simple tuning scheme for setting node-specific frustration parameters as functions of native frequencies and degrees is devel...

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering demonstrates that two parties share entanglement even if the measurement devices of one party are untrusted. Here, going beyond this bipartite concept, we develop a novel formalism to explore a large class of EPR steering from generic multipartite quantum systems of arbitrarily high dimensionality and degrees of freedom, such as graph states and hyperentan...

Nonperturbative triviality and vacuum stability mass bounds are obtained for the Higgs scalar and top quark degrees of freedom in the standard electroweak model using Wilson renormalization group techniques. Particular attention is given to the effect of the generalized top Yukawa coupling on the scalar mass upper bound.

Classical transport theory for colored particles is investigated and employed to derive the hard thermal loops of QCD. A formal construction of phase-space for color degrees of freedom is presented. The gauge invariance of the non-Abelian Vlasov equations is verified and used as a guiding principle in our approximation scheme. We then derive the generating functional of hard thermal loops from ...

We formulate a universal characterization of the many-particle quantum entanglement in the ground state of a topologically ordered two-dimensional medium with a mass gap. We consider a disk in the plane, with a smooth boundary of length L, large compared to the correlation length. In the ground state, by tracing out all degrees of freedom in the exterior of the disk, we obtain a marginal densit...

Contrast analysis of repeated-measures data generally focuses on hypotheses when only 1 pattern of results is of theoretical interest. This article articulates a framework for contrast analysis in repeated-measures contexts in which researchers have hypotheses relevant to 1 potential pattern or multiple potential patterns of results. For example, a researcher might ask whether participants exhi...

Lerner, called “The Bunsen Burner” by his high school classmates, was a scientist’s scientist. Born in 1921, he later took Bunsen as his middle name. He earned his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota, both in 1945. In 1952, he moved to Oregon with his friend and colleague Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, who was the newly appointed head of the University of Oregon Medical School’s Div...
