Active non-specific immunotherapy has been used to prolong remissions in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The series reported here used Bordetella pertussis vaccine in a controlle trial after intensive chemotherapy. Possibly immunotherapy delayed the onset of relapse in the treated patients, but no long-term remissions were obtained. Further work is needed to establish the role of immunotherapy i...

A 55 year old woman developed chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) one year after she had been successfully treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). When the ALL relapsed the CMML remitted only to return with further remission of the ALL. A consistent chromosomal abnormality, t(4;11), was present during both CMML and ALL phases.

A 4 year old girl treated with a standard chemotherapy protocol for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia developed hepatic candidosis during the consolidation phase. This relapsed after a prolonged course of amphotericin B and flucytosine. An eight week course of liposomal amphotericin produced a marked clinical improvement which was sustained for one year. A subsequent relapse was associated with tra...

In patients with acute myeloblastic leukaemia the mean serum ferritin concentration showed a twenty-five-fold increase compared with normal people, and in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (A.L.L.) there was a thirteen-fold increase. The high concentration of circulating ferritin seemed to be related to increased synthesis by leukaemic cells. The return of serum concentrations to norm...

The discovery of monoclonal antibodies made possible the immunological investigation of malignant hemopathies, facilitating the positive diagnosis. We are presenting several cases of acute leukaemia, chronic lymphoblastic leukaemia and one of multiple myelomas in which flowcytometry was useful for establishing the diagnosis. Today, flowcytometry represents an indispensable instrument for the ma...

Objectives This is a protocol for Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: To assess the effect of number PEG‐asparaginase doses on survival and relapse in children adolescents with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). A uniform system of classification and nomenclature of the acute leukaemias, at present lacking, should permit more accurate recording of the distribution of cases entered into clinical trials, and could provide a reference standard when newly developed cell-surface markers believed to characterize specific cell types are applied to cases of acute leukaemia. Proposals based on conventional morp...
