Nanosized anatase TiO(2) single crystals with 18% {001} facets have a raised conduction band minimum by 0.1 eV, and exhibit photocatalytic activity both for generating *OH radicals and for splitting water into hydrogen that is markedly superior--by factors of 5.6 and 8.2, respectively--to reference ca. 3 microm anatase TiO(2) with 72% {001} facets.

Nano-sized anatase TiO(2) with exposed {001} facets was synthesized from lamellar protonated titanate precursor. Owing to small size (ca. 11 nm) and high surface area (155 m(2) g(-1)), the crystals with 26.1% {001} facets exhibited markedly superior photoactivity to reference ca. 76 nm anatase TiO(2) nanosheets with 88.4% {001} facets.

We report resistivity and thermo-electric power measurements of the anatase phase of TiO2 under pressure up to 2.3 GPa. Despite its transparent appearance, the single crystal of anatase exhibits a metallic-like resistivity above 60 K, at all pressures. The rather high value of the thermo-electric power at room temperature points to complex transport mechanism in this phase.

A novel fluoride free protocol for highly truncated anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with exposed {001} facets by preferential adsorption of CO3(2-) ions is developed. Experimental observations were corroborated by first principle quantum chemical DFT calculations. The synthesized anatase TiO2 showed improved photocatalytic activity.
