In epileptic patients carbamazepine and diphenylhydantoin have opposite effects on whole and free plasma tryptophan concentrations, the former elevating and the latter depressing them. It is unlikely that these observations relate to the similar anti-epileptic properties of these two drugs but they may relate to their different effects on mental function and mood.

Reversed-phase liquid chromatographic (RP/LC) procedures are used to optimize the reaction conditions for the large scale preparation of 2,2-dimethyl-N-benzylmalonamide, 1. In acute studies using mice and rats, compound 1 is a very effective anticonvulsant agent. Large quantities of 1 (ca. 300 g) are needed for detailed studies of its chronic effects. LC monitoring of the synthesis of intermedi...

INTRODUCTION Complex psychopathological and behavioral symptoms, such as delusions and aggression against care providers, are often the primary cause of acute hospital admissions of elderly patients to emergency units and psychiatric departments. This issue resembles an interdisciplinary clinically highly relevant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge across many medical subjects and general pra...

Two cases of megaloblastic anemia associated with anticonvulsant drugs were studied. Both cases were inpatients of psychiatric hospitals and had quite inadequate intakes of food. The former had lung tuber. culosis and the second had febril illness before the manifestation of anemia. Multiple examinations including bone marrow smears, serum iron levels, vitamin B12 levels, estimation of urinary ...

The specific nitrogen flame-ionization detector was used for the rapid simultaneous determination of eight anticonvulsant drugs and one drug metabolite in plasma and for three of the drugs in tissues. The system of analysis allows the occasional rapid estimation of barbiturate in plasma. No derivative formation is required and the whole range of drugs can be determined in a single diethyl ether...

Data strongly suggestthat the longer patients have been treated in New Castle State Hospital, the higher the probability that they will demonstrate the low specific gravity syndrome. It is believed that a probably unrecognized alteration in human water metabolism among institutionalized patients who have chronic, severe epilepsy and who have been administered anticonvulsant drugs for many years...

Denzimol, a new anticonvulsant drug, is currently undergoing clinical evaluation. In this paper we report its use in six patients who were also taking carbamazepine and two patients taking phenytoin. There was a striking elevation of serum carbamazepine, carbamazepine-10, 11 epoxide and phenytoin concentrations in all patients on the addition of denzimol therapy. The interaction with carbamazep...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate bodyweight gain during pregabalin therapy for epilepsy and the utility of a short counseling program to prevent this side effect. METHODS Randomized controlled trial on the effects of extended versus standard patient counseling on the risk of bodyweight gain with 3- and 6-month follow-up including a consecutive sample of adult outpatients with epilepsy eligible for prega...

Drugs administered for anesthesia can trigger seizure attacks in patients with epilepsy. Benzodiazepines have been consistently reported to be anticonvulsants, and a novel benzodiazepine, remimazolam, was recently introduced. We report case of total intravenous maintained remimazolam patient epilepsy who underwent deep brain stimulation both anterior thalamic nuclei. Despite the administration ...
