Carpolobia lutea leaves (CLL) (Polygalaceae) were earlier screened and the antiulcer ethnomedicinal claim established. This article seeks to quantitatively isolate, elucidate the active compounds from most active CLL fraction. Fractionation was by semi-preparative HPLC; the active fraction was subjected to radical scavenging assays (RSA) and quantification of the total phenolic content (TPC) we...

The alcoholic extract of Leucas aspera (ALA) was investigated for its antiulcer effect by two experimental models. A significant reduction in acid secretion and ulcer score was observed in rats after ALA treatment. The observed antiulcer effect of ALA may be due to a combination of antisecretary effect and a protective effect on gastric mucosa.

The antiulcer activity of an aqueous extract of Pyrenacantha staudtii was studied in rats and was compared with that of cimetidine. Ulcers were induced in rats by means of various experimental models: aspirin, indomethacin, serotonin and reserpine. The extract was found to have significant antiulcer activity against all the models studied. Cimetidine was found to be ineffective against serotoni...

BACKGROUND Although many drugs are available for the treatment of gastric ulcers, often these drugs are ineffective. Many antidepressant drugs have been shown to have antiulcer activity in various models of experimental ulcer. One such drug, the antidepressant mirtazapine, has been reported to have an antiulcer effect that involves an increase in antioxidant, and a decrease in oxidant, paramete...

Patol churna is a well known ayurvedic formulation of Trichosanthes cucumerina Linn. (cucurbitaceae) administered in case of number of alimentary and liver disorders. It is widely used in Indian folk medicine for variety of disease conditions. The aim of present study was to evaluate the antiulcer activity of 50% ethanolic extract of patol churna (PCE) using various experimental models of gastr...

Effects of KW-5805, a new antiulcer agent, on various experimental ulcers, necrotizing agent-induced gastric lesions and gastric acid secretion in rats were compared with those of pirenzepine and cimetidine. KW-5805 showed antiulcer activities against experimental gastric and duodenal ulcers (ED50 = 1.2-10.0 mg/kg, p.o.). KW-5805 effectively inhibited gastric lesions induced by various necrotiz...

Helicobacter pylori is an important risk factor for peptic ulcers. If infection withH pylori is cured, ulcers associated with H pylori do not recur. An H pylori “test and treat” strategy for patients with peptic ulcers having long term antisecretory treatment has been suggested, in the hope that eradicating H pylori would curtail the rising use of antiulcer drugs. 2 We describe the long term ef...

Fixed oil of O. basilicum was found to possess significant antiulcer activity against aspirin, indomethacin, alcohol, histamine, reserpine, serotonin and stress-induced ulceration in experimental animal models. Significant inhibition was also observed in aspirin-induced gastric ulceration and secretion in pylorus ligated rats. The lipoxygenase inhibiting, histamine antagonistic and antisecretor...

The effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Lasianthera africana on experimentally induced ulcer was studied in rats. The extract (1000 - 3000mg/kg) inhibited ethanol-induced, indomethacin - induced and reserpine -induced ulcer models in a dose dependent fashion. The various degrees of inhibitions were statistically significant (p<0.01). The effect of the extract was comparable to that of the stand...

Ulcers were introduced in 36 hrs fasted albino rats of either sex by aspirin plus pylorus ligation, aspirin, and ethanol treatment. Each induction model had four groups namely control, test and standard. In each model of ulcer induction, group that was pre dosed with the ethanolic extract of leaves of Sida cordifolia showed a considerable degree of antiulcer activity in comparison to positive c...
