Millions of people in Bangladesh drink arsenic-contaminated water despite increased awareness of consequences to health. Theory-based and evidence-based interventions are likely to have greater impact on people switching to existing arsenic-safe wells than providing information alone. To test this assumption, we first developed interventions based on an empirical test of the Risk, Attitudes, No...

Schwertmannite-mediated removal of arsenic from contaminated water has attracted increasing attention. However, schwertmannite chemical synthesis behavior under different H2O2 supply rates for ferrous ions oxidation is unclear. This study investigated pH, ferrous ions oxidation efficiency, and total iron precipitation efficiency during schwertmannite synthesis by adding H2O2 into FeSO4 · 7H2O s...

An analytical speciation method, capable of separating inorganic arsenic (As (V), As (III] and its methylated metabolites (MMAA, DMAA) from common, inert, dietary organoarsenicals, was applied to the determination of arsenic in urine from a variety of workers occupationally exposed to inorganic arsenic compounds. Mean urinary arsenic (As (V) + As (III) + MMAA + DMAA) concentrations ranged from ...

Thirty six APML patients achieving hematological remission with As2O3 were serially monitored using RT-PCR. Though only 5.5% achieved molecular remission at induction remission, 94.5% became negative during consolidation. At 20 months follow-up, 85% remain in remission but longer follow up studies are needed to monitor late relapses.

Arsenic trioxide (As(2)O(3)) has been found effective in the treatment in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APML). Most studies with As(2)O(3) involve patients with APML who have relapsed following standard therapy. Between January 1998 and July 2000, 14 patients were recruited for an ongoing trial of As(2)O(3) in the treatment of newly diagnosed APML. Arsenic trioxide was administ...

The extent of and factors controlling arsenic penetration into the central nervous system (CNS) remain unclear. Elemental arsenic levels in 67 paired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma samples from 9 patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) on oral arsenic trioxide (As2O3), obtained during intrathecal chemotherapy (treatment of CNS APL, n = 6; prophylaxis, n = 3) were measured. Median...

In their letter to EHP, Huff et al. (1) maintained that arsenic is still viewed as "a paradoxical carcinogen; that is, carcinogenic to humans but not to laboratory animals," and that this paradox will be believed until car-cinogenicity of arsenic is demonstrated in animal experiments such as "long-term inhalation studies using arsenic trioxide." Huff et al. (1) seem not to take into considerati...

BACKGROUND Dietary exposure from food to toxic inorganic arsenic (iAs) in the general U.S. population has not been well studied. OBJECTIVES The goal of this research was to quantify dietary As exposure and analyze the major contributors to total As (tAs) and iAs. Another objective was to compare model predictions with observed data. METHODS Probabilistic exposure modeling for dietary As was...

A 45 year-old man was brought to the emergency department having ingested an unknown quantity of a green substance that was subsequently found to be a termite killer containing arsenic trioxide. Despite aggressive resuscitation, chelation therapy and gastrectomy, he died within 24 hours of presentation. We present the clinical course, pathological findings and a literature review of this rare a...

Arsenic is the most toxic metalloid present in the natural environment in both organic and inorganic arsenic forms. Inorganic arsenic is often more hazardous than the organic form. Arsenite and arsenate compounds are the major inorganic forms which are toxic causing severe human health dysfunction including cancer. Excretion of arsenic from the system is found elusive. Therefore, it is of inter...
