Synthesis of lactococcin 972 is plasmid-encoded. An operon composed of two genes that encode pre-bacteriocin and a putative immunity protein has been identified. The first gene encodes a 91-residue polypeptide that is exported via a sec-dependent system to give the mature 66-aa bacteriocin. The immunity protein is a 563-residue polypeptide with seven potential transmembrane domains. Two transcr...

Bacteriocin AS-48 showed high bactericidal activity for mesophilic and psychrotrophic strains of Bacillus cereus over a broad pH range. AS-48 inhibition of the enterotoxin-producing strain LWL1 was enhanced by sodium nitrite, sodium lactate, and sodium chloride. The latter also enhanced AS-48 activity against strain CECT 131. Bacterial growth and enterotoxin production by strain LWL1 were compl...

Staphylococcus aureus 4185 was previously shown to produce at least two bacteriocins. One of them is encoded by pRJ101. To detect the bacteriocin-encoding gene cluster, an ~9160 kb region of pRJ101 was sequenced. In silico analyses identified 10 genes (aclX, aclB, aclI, aclT, aclC, aclD, aclA, aclF, aclG and aclH) that might be involved in the production of a novel cyclic bacteriocin named aure...

Bacteriocin has been used widely in industry as a Backgrounds biopreservative agent. The objective of the present study was to investigate the potency of Bacteriocin isolated from tiger prawn and Penaeus monodon freshwater shrimp as an anti-bacterial on fish. Macrobrachium rosenbergii : A total of ten candidates of probiotic bacteria consisted of five Methods isolates from tiger shrimps (H1, H2...

Lactobacilli are gram-positive bacteria that are a subdominant element in the human gastrointestinal microbiota, and which are commonly used in the food industry. Some lactobacilli are considered probiotic, and have been associated with health benefits. However, there is very little culture-independent information on how consumed probiotic microorganisms might affect the entire intestinal micro...

Previous studies of genes involved in the production of sakacin P by Lactobacillus sakei Lb674 revealed the presence of an inducible promoter downstream of the known spp gene clusters. We show here that this promoter drives the expression of an operon consisting of a bacteriocin gene (sppQ), a cognate immunity gene (spiQ), another gene with an unknown function (orf4), and a pseudoimmunity gene ...

Purpose: To carry out the extraction, purification and biological characterization, and assess the antibacterial activity of bacteriocin from Lactobacillus acidophilus XH1. Methods: Chloroform extraction method was used for bacteriocin extraction while characterization of bacteriocin was carried out by flat-dug well agar diffusion assay. The antibacterial mechanisms of bacteriocin were examined...

Food-grade bacteria capable of producing bacteriocin with desirable preservation attributes have been isolated from traditional Indian fermented food dal vari, which has not been investigated so far. Among different isolates, Bacillus subtilis R75, isolated on MRS agar, exhibited antagonism against a wide range of foodborne pathogens that cause serious spoilage. Extracellularly produced bacteri...

Pediococcus pentosaceus FBB61 and L7230, isolated from cucumber fermentations, produced a bacteriocin, designated pediocin A, which had identical activity spectra against species of Pediococcus, Clostridium, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus. Both strains possessed a 13.6-megadalton plasmid (pMD136). Plasmid curing experiments suggested that both bacteriocin immunity and production determinants...

We report here the draft genome sequence of Weissella confusa MBF8-1, an isolate from a homemade fermented soybean product that produces sucrases and exhibits antibacterial (bacteriocin) activity. The draft genome of W. confusa MBF8-1 comprises a 2.2-Mbp chromosome and a 17.8-kbp bacteriocin-encoding plasmid. Two putative glucansucrase genes were also identified.
