Groups use procedural structures to organize their efforts in meetings. These structures are affected by group members’ preferences for the degree of procedural order they want in a meeting, as well as by the communication media available in the meeting environment. Analysis of thirty partially distributed experimental groups that met over a series of four sessions was conducted by using two me...

This article introduces the design principles of serious games for chronic patients based on behavioral models. First, key features of the targeted chronic condition (Diabetes) are explained. Then, the role of psychological behavioral models in the management of chronic conditions is covered. Logic ooers the possibility of modeling and reasoning about hardware and software. But which logic? We propose monadic logics of strings and trees as good candidates for many kinds of discrete systems. These logics are natural, decidable, yet substantially more expressive , extensions of Boolean logic. We motivate their applicability through examples.

Fraud is an ancient crime and one that annually causes hundreds of billions of dollars in losses. We examine the behavioral patterns over time of different types of frauds, which illustrate cyclical frequencies. We develop an evolutionary theory that suggests cyclic behavior in frauds should be common. JEL classifications: D92, L15, P17

We briefly review three aspects of string cosmology: (1) the " stochas-tic " approach to the pre-big bang scenario, (2) the presence of chaos in the generic cosmological solutions of the tree-level low-energy effective actions coming out of string theory, and (3) the remarkable link between the latter chaos and the Weyl groups of some hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras. Talk given at the Francqui Co...

We investigate quantitatively the so-called leverage eeect, which corresponds to a negative correlation between past returns and future volatility. For individual stocks, this correlation is moderate and decays exponentially over 50 days, while for stock indices, it is much stronger but decays faster. For individual stocks, the magnitude of this correlation has a universal value that can be rat...

Material in this chapter draws on ideas from a number of my earlier publications, including: McGrath, J.E., 1984; McGrath and Brinberg, 1984; Brinberg and McGrath, 1985; Runkel and McGrath, 1972; McGrath, Martin, and Kulka, 1982. " Doing research" simply means the systematic use of some set of theoretical and empirical tools to try to increase our understanding of some set of phenomena or event...

A crisis can involve multiple organizations during high pressure events, and it is up to the Command & Control (C2) unit to provide direction and coordination for the response (Brehmer, 2006). Hard as this problem is, there is still no ‘one-solution’. Dissimilar organizations with very different methods seem to be able to master the problem. This paper presents the initial development of a new ...
