This article develops an alternative form of Dempster’s rule of combination for binary variables. This alternative form does not only provide a closed form formulae for efficient computation but also enables researchers to develop closed form analytical formulae for assessing risks such as information security risk, fraud risk, audit risk, independence risk, etc., involved in assurance services...

Consider a scenario in which two parties Alice and Bob as well as an opponent Eve receive the output of a binary symmetric source (e,g. installed in a satellite) over individual, not necessarily independent binary symmetric channels. Alice and Bob share no secret key initially and can only communicate over a public channel completely accessible to Eve. The authors derive a lower bound on the ra...

This paper presents a family of algorithms for approximate inference in credal networks (that is, models based on directed acyclic graphs and set-valued probabilities) that contain only binary variables. Such networks can represent incomplete or vague beliefs, lack of data, and disagreements among experts; they can also encode models based on belief functions and possibilistic measures. All alg...

When can a single variable be more accurate in binary choice than multiple sources of information? We derive analytically the probability that a single variable (SV) will correctly predict one of two choices when both criterion and predictor are continuous variables. We further provide analogous derivations for multiple regression (MR) and equal weighting (EW) and specify the conditions under w...

It is "well known" that in linear models: (1) testable constraints on the marginal distribution of observed variables distinguish certain cases in which an Wlobserved cause jointly influences several observed variables; (2) the technique of "instrumental variables" sometimes permits an estimation of the influence of one variable on another even when the association between the variables may be ...

A simple model, recently introduced as a generalization of the Wako-Saito; model of protein folding, is used to investigate the properties of widely studied molecules under external forces. The equilibrium properties of the model proteins, together with their energy landscape, are studied on the basis of the exact solution of the model. Afterwards, the kinetic response of the molecules to a for...

One of the challenging optimization problems is determining the minimizer of a nonlinear programming problem that has binary variables. A vexing difficulty is the rate the work to solve such problems increases as the number of discrete variables increases. Any such problem with bounded discrete variables, especially binary variables, may be transformed to that of finding a global optimum of a p...

Bounds of association coefficients for binary variables are derived using the arithmetic-geometric-harmonic mean inequality. More precisely, it is shown which presence/absence coefficients are bounds with respect to each other. Using the new bounds it is investigated whether a coefficient is in general closer to either its upper or its lower bound.

Linear cryptanalysis makes use of statistical models that consider linear approximations over block cipher and random permutation as binary random variables. In this note we develop conditions under which linear independence of binary random variables and statistical independence of their correlations are equivalent properties. As an application we obtain that the correlations of linear combina...

The paper outlines a new development in the Contextualityby-Default theory as applied to finite systems of binary random variables. The logic and principles of the original theory remain unchanged, but the definition of contextuality of a system of random variables is now based on multimaximal rather than maximal couplings of the variables that measure the same property in different contexts: a...
