In a previous study of secondary lead smelter workers (males), a significant prevalence of low hemoglobin levels (less than 14 g/100 ml) was found; a statistically significant negative correlation between hemoglobin and zinc protoporphyrin was also detected. In the present study serum iron (Fe) levels and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) were included in the investigation of 111 secondary lea...

We investigated the relation between maternal anaemia and neonatal iron status in 97 mothers and their babies. Haemoglobin (Hb), serum iron, total iron binding capacity and serum ferritin were determined. Mothers were divided into 3 groups: iron-deficient anaemic (22.7%), non-anaemic iron-deficient (27.8%) and non-anaemic non-iron-deficient (49.5%). There was no significant difference in the me...

The marrow iron reserves, automated red cell indices, serum iron, and total iron binding capacity of 69 geriatric patients were recorded. A fall in the mean red cell volume (MCV) to between 71 and 82 fl failed to distinguish between iron deficiency and the 'anaemia of chronic disorders'. However, there was no reserve of marrow iron in the eight patients with an MCV of 70 fl or less.

BACKGROUND Deferasirox (DFX) is an oral iron chelator that is used worldwide for the treatment of iron overload. Although serum ferritin level is usually measured as a marker of the efficacy of DFX, we sometimes experienced unexplainable changes in other serum markers for iron. We hypothesized that photometric assays for serum iron (sFe) and unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC) might be aff...

To examine the association of serum leptin level with anemia in hemodialysis, we investigated 36 patients (males: 21, diabetics: 11) under regular hemodialysis. For patients, complete blood counts, iron profile, serum leptin, and adequacy of hemodialysis were assessed. In this study a significant correlation of serum leptin with level of hemoglobin and body mass index was detected. An associati...

Patients with colorectal carcinoma showed statistically significant lower values of transferrin saturation, total iron binding capacity and serum iron level as compared with control group, while the level of ferritin and the size of labile iron pool in carcinoma patients were higher, although this difference was not statistically significant. Our observations are in favour of the hypothesis whi...

A study was conducted to evaluate factors which might influence the prognosis of persons with pneumonia owing to Streptococcus pneumoniae. Serum iron, total iron binding capacity and unbound iron binding capacity (UIBC), were evaluated in 35 such patients. Of the 10 patients with UIBC levels less than 130 micrograms per dl on admission to the hospital, six died, three had complications, and onl...

Iron overload in Africa was previously regarded as purely due to excessive iron in traditional beer, but we recently found evidence that transferrin saturation and unsaturated iron binding capacity may be influenced by an interaction between dietary iron content and a gene distinct from any HLA-linked locus. To determine if serum ferritin follows a genetic pattern and to confirm our previous ob...

BACKGROUND C282Y hereditary haemochromatosis is an appropriate condition for population screening. Transferrin saturation, the best screening test to date, is relatively expensive, labour intensive, and cannot be automated. Unsaturated iron binding capacity is a surrogate marker of transferrin saturation and its measurement can be automated. AIMS To evaluate a screening strategy for C282Y her...
