ROPIVACAINE (1-propyl-29,69-pipecoloxylidide) is a long-acting aminoamide local anesthetic that has been introduced into clinical use in the last few years, largely as a replacement for bupivacaine. Bupivacaine has been reported to possess a significant antibacterial effect. Because data regarding ropivacaine are not available, we compared the antibacterial effects of clinically appropriate con...

A double-blind comparison of carbonated bupivacaine and bupivacaine hydrochloride in extradural anaesthesia was performed in 40 patients. No significant differences in the onset times, sensory blockade, motor blockade and duration of anaesthesia were demonstrated. Carbonated bupivacaine does not appear to offer any advantage over the hydrochloride salt for extradural anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND Partially paralyzed patients may be placed in the risk of pharyngeal dysfunction. Bupivacaine acts as acetylcholine receptor ion channel blocker and may synergistically interact with rocuronium to augment NM blockade. Thus, this study aims to elucidate whether or not, at a therapeutic concentration, bupivacaine by itself may cause NM blockade and reduce an effective concentration of ...

Five healthy, unmedicated male volunteers, aged 19-25 yr, participated in a double-blind, crossover study. Each subject received, on separate occasions and via a catheter placed at L2, 1.5% etiodocaine HCl20 ml with adrenaline 5 mug/ml, or 0.75% bupivacaine HCl 20 ml with adrenaline 5 mug/ml for extradural analgesia. In addition, in order to calculate the absorption rate of the local anaestheti...

BACKGROUND This study was designed to determine the disposition of bupivacaine and its metabolites in the maternal, placental, and fetal compartments, using multiple sampling time points in chronically prepared awake pregnant rats. METHODS All animals received an intravenous infusion of bupivacaine at a rate of 0.33 mg. kg-1. min-1 over a period of 15 min. The fetuses were delivered either at...

BACKGROUND Adequate analgesia is important for early hospital discharge after meniscectomy. A femoral nerve block may reduce the need for systemic analgesics, with fewer side effects; however, motor block can occur. Ultrasound-guided femoral nerve block may reduce the required local anesthetic concentration, preventing motor block. OBJECTIVE The primary objective of this study was to determin...

Background: Fentanyl is intrathecally used as an adjuvant to bupivacaine in spinal anesthesia, as well as labor analgesia, and in day surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the separate neurotoxic effect of each drug using histological analysis. Methods: Rats (N = 39) received fentanyl at 0.12μl/g body weight (0.05, 0.5, and 1 mg/ml) or bupivacaine (5, 25, and 50 mg/ml) dissolved in sa...
