A series of bis(amidinate) tin(II) complexes is synthesized and shown to rapidly polymerize ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) in the presence and absence of benzyl alcohol giving high-molecular-weight poly(ε-CL) (M(n) up to 160,600 Da). Ligands having electron donating groups were found to accelerate the polymerization by making the complex more nucleophilic.

Graft poly(ε-caprolactone)s (PCLs) with high graft density were synthesized by using random copolymer poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) to initiate ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone, with and without cocatalyst Sn(Oct)2. The graft copolymer were characterized by IR, 1H and 13C NMR. The solution property and the crystallization behavior were also investigated.

Low-molecular weight poly(epsilon-caprolactone), polylactides and copolymers of epsilon-caprolactone and lactides were obtained by the polymerization of cyclic esters in the presence of a carnitine/SnOct(2) system. Their structures were proven by means of MALDI-TOF, IR and NMR studies. Effects of temperature, reaction time and carnitine dosage on the polymerization process were examined.
