A combined-disk method using imipenem and cloxacillin was evaluated to discriminate between carbapenemase-producing (n = 56) and nonproducing (n = 62) strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. With a cloxacillin load of 4,000 μg/disk, this very simple method showed a sensitivity and a specificity of 100%, irrespective of the type of carbapenemase produced.

To characterize the genomic context of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC), we sequenced 78 Enterobacteriaceae isolates from Pakistan and the United States encoding KPC, NDM-1, or no carbapenemase. High similarities of the results indicate rapid spread of carbapenem resistance between strains, including globally disseminated pathogens.

The prevalence of Klebsiella pneumoniae coproducing carbapenemase metallo-β-lactamase 1 (NDM-1) and OXA-48 has been increasing globally since 2013. The complete genome of KP617 was sequenced and assembled into a circular chromosome and two plasmids. This sequence provides the genetic background for understanding the evolution of carbapenemase genes in K. pneumoniae KP617.

Two major hospitals in Kano, North West Nigeria have recorded increasing resistance of clinical pathogens to broad spectrum β lactams, mediated by extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESβL) and non ESBLs. A study was therefore undertaken to determine the occurrence and prevalence of plasmid and chromosomal mediated AmpC βL and carbapenemase in addition to already known ESBL due to increasing resistan...

ABSTRACT           Background and Objectives: Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen associated with nosocomial infections. Treatment of infections caused by this bacterium has become challenging due to increasing rate of resistance to a wide range of antibiotics such as carbapenems. One of the main mechanisms of resistance to carbapen...

The spread of carbapenemase-producing gram-negative bacilli is a global public health problem. Several authors have proposed phenotypic assays to presumptively detect these enzymes applicable low and medium complexity laboratories. In the present study, we developed compared different techniques using strains genetically identified as carbapenemase-producing. All tested methods detected presenc...

Introduction: Acinetobacter baumannii, a known causative agent of nosocomial infections, is one of the highly antibiotic-resistant gram-negative bacilli. Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter isolates are increasingly reported worldwide. Carbapenems such as imipenem and meropenem are efficient antimicrobial agents commonly used for the treatment of infections caused by multi- resistant A. baumanni...

Recently, Tijet et al. evaluated the Carba NP test (1), which we developed in order to identify carbapenemase producers. Our first study included 316 carbapenemaseand non-carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates (2, 3). Tijet et al. confirmed that this biochemical test has an excellent specificity of 100%, together with an excellent positive predictive valu...

To date, no outbreak of carbapenemase-producing bacteria has been reported for Austria. While outbreaks of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing K. pneumoniae have been increasingly reported, no outbreak caused by KPC-producing Klebsiella oxytoca has been described yet, to the best of our knowledge. We report an outbreak of KPC-producing K. oxytoca. In 5 months, 31 KPC-producing K...
