The recent Natural Killer (NK) cell maturation model postulates that CD34(+) hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) first develop into CD56(bright) NK cells, then into CD56(dim)CD57(-) and finally into terminally maturated CD56(dim)CD57(+). The molecular mechanisms of human NK cell differentiation and maturation however are incompletely characterized. Here we present a proteome analysis of distinct dev...

To study the early stages of development from stem cells of the CD56+ cell population [which includes natural killer (NK) cells], granulocyte-colony stimulating factor-mobilized peripheral blood CD34+ cells from healthy donors were sorted to >99% purity and cultured in the presence of stem cell factor and interleukin (IL)-2. After 3 weeks in culture, the majority of cells acquired CD33, with or...

BACKGROUND The expression of CD56 is considered a bad prognostic factor for overall survival, lower rates or short complete remission and extramedullary invasion but the results are controversial. The importance of validating new prognostic parameters in acute leukemias was the reason to investigate the CD56 expression in blast cells of patients with acute myeloid leukemia. METHODS A cohort o...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the phenotypic CTCs heterogeneity (TTF-1+ and/or CD56+) in SCLC patients and correlate it with the CellSearch. Peripheral blood was obtained from 108 consecutive patients. CTCs were detected by CellSearch and double-immunofluorescence using anti-CD45, anti-TTF-1 and anti-CD56 antibodies. Before chemotherapy TTF-1+/CD45-, CD56+/CD45- and TTF-1+/CD56+ CTCs wer...

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of the CD56+NK-TIL count in infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC) of breast. MATERIAL AND METHODS Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed using antibodies specific for CD56 on formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue sections of 175 infiltrating ductal carcinomas (IDC) of breast. Distribution of intratumoral and st...

CD4+CD56+ hematodermic neoplasm (CD4+CD56+HN) is an aggressive hematopoietic malignancy with distinct clinicopathologic and immunophenotypic features that commonly involve the skin, bone marrow, and blood. Differentiation from cutaneous myelomonocytic leukemia (c-AML) may be exceedingly difficult and requires extensive phenotyping. The molecular mechanisms involved in the development of CD4+CD5...

Background and aims. Odontogenic cysts and tumors have a wide spectrum of clinical characteristics that lead to the different management strategies. Since definite diagnosis is difficult in some cases, it has been suggested that CD56 may be a candidate marker for definitive diagnosis of some odontogenic tumors. The present study was designed to examine CD56 expression in lesions with histopatho...

Using a very simple flow cytometry protocol, we found that CD36 and CD117 on granulocytes and CD56 on monocytes were the major bone marrow phenotypic aberrations in patients with myelodysplasia, including CMML. CD56 on monocytes was associated with CMML. Importantly, phenotypic aberrations were lost on blood cells, except for CD56.

CD56+ T cells were studied in samples of peripheral blood from small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients compared with healthy controls. Relative numbers of CD56+CD3+ cells were increased in NSCLC (P = 0.001) and SCLC (P = 0.002) compared with normal subjects but their ability to respond to activation by up-regulating CD25 or producing IFN-γ were both signifi...

OBJECTIVE The role of innate immunity in the pathogenesis of cryptococcal meningitis is unclear. We hypothesized that natural killer (NK) cell and monocyte responses show central nervous system (CNS) compartment-specific profiles, and are altered by antifungal therapy and combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) during cryptococcal meningitis/HIV coinfection. DESIGN Substudy of a prospective...
