Cellulosic plant biomass is a promising sustainable resource for generating alternative biofuels and biochemicals with microbial factories. But a remaining bottleneck is engineering microbes that are tolerant of toxins generated during biomass processing, because mechanisms of toxin defense are only beginning to emerge. Here, we exploited natural diversity in 165 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain...

By applying the Arkenol process using highly concentrated sulfuric acid, various biomass feedstocks, including cedar tree, rice straw, newspaper, and bagasse, were successfully processed and converted into glucose and xylose for fermentation usage in a flash fermentation reactor in which the performance of National Renewable Energy Laboratory's patented rec-Zymomonas mobilis 31821 (pZB5) after ...

Abundant lignocellulosic biomass could become a source of sugars and lignin, potential feedstocks for the now emergent bio-renewable economy. The production and conversion of sugars from biomass have been well-studied, but far less is known about the production of lignin that is amenable to valorization. Here we report the isolation of lignin generated from the hydrolysis of biomass dissolved i...

Effects of Goldstrip sardine (Sardinella gibossa) and poultry by-product protein hydrolysate on amino acid composition, growth and alevines survival of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. Two hydrolyzed protein sources were incorporated into six diets for start-feeding rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) alevines, in 3 different replacing levels (10%, 25% and 50%) of fish mea...

This study aimed to select a yeast strain that effectively utilises xylose produce xylitol from the vinasse of ethanol broth obtained fermentation sugarcane bagasse hydrolysate. Eleven strains xylose-fermenting yeasts were evaluated for their abilities utilise and xylitol. Two showed outstanding performance in semi-defined medium selected further testing with medium. Candida guilliermondii TIST...

A method was devised to construct stable and steep chemical gradients in slide cultures to study the movements of gliding cells. The movement of Myxococcus xanthus individual cells and small swarms was studied in these gradients. There was no response to gradients of Casitone and yeast extract that were previously reported to stimulate a positive chemotactic response with M. xanthus.

Production of cellulosic ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass leads to the generation a hemicellulosic hydrolysate during feedstock pretreatment. This is rich in sugars, but also contains inhibitory compounds (mainly acetic acid and phenolic compounds) concentrations that may be toxic microbial growth. Currently, this side-stream production process processed as waste, due lack feasible alternat...

BACKGROUND Inefficient carbohydrate conversion has been an unsolved problem for various lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment technologies, including AFEX, dilute acid, and ionic liquid pretreatments. Previous work has shown 22% of total carbohydrates are typically unconverted, remaining as soluble or insoluble oligomers after hydrolysis (72 h) with excess commercial enzyme loading (20 mg enzyme...

The pulp and paper industry faces an emerging challenge for valorising wastes side-streams generated according to the biorefinery concept. Eucalyptus globulus bark, abundant industrial residue in Portuguese sector, has a high potential be converted into biobased products instead of being burned. This work aimed evaluate ethanol production from E. bark previously submitted kraft pulping through ...

Fish protein hydrolysates were prepared from Cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis) muscle using alcalase and protamex methods. By conducting the Cuttlefish protein hydrolysate using alcalase (CPHA), it showed higher degrees of hydrolysis, proximate composition, yield, emulsifying activity index (EAI), emulsion stability index (ESI), foaming activity index (FAI), solubility, water holding capacity (WHC) ...
