BACKGROUND & AIMS In cholestatic syndromes, body accumulation of bile acids is thought to cause itching. However, the mechanisms supporting this effect remain elusive. Recently, GPBAR1 (TGR5) a G-protein coupled receptor has been shown to mediate itching caused by intradermal administration of DCA and LCA. 6α-ethyl-3α, 7α-dihydroxy-24-nor-5β-cholan-23-ol (BAR502) is a non-bile acid dual ligand ...
INTRODUCTION We wished to determine whether cholestasis induced by total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in preterm newborn infants is associated with increased oxidative stress secondary to increased reactive oxygen intermediates. We hypothesized that elevated urinary thiobarbituric-acid-reacting substances (TBARS), a marker of oxidative stress, would be associated with hepatocellular injury as mea...

Conjugated hyperbilirubinemia is a rare complication of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). We report a case of a 2-year-old female with Streptococcus pneumonia-associated HUS (SP+ HUS) who developed severe cholestasis. It is important for pediatric gastroenterologists to be aware of manifestations of HUS, and that although rare, cholestasis can be one of the early findings in patients with SP+ HUS.
Optic nerve hypoplasia with hypopituitarism and intact septum pellucidum is a variant of septo-optic dysplasia or deMorsier's syndrome.' Although neonatal jaundice has been seen with this syndrome, the association with severe prolonged cholestatic jaundice has not been emphasised. We describe three patients who presented with cholestatic jaundice and were found to have optic nerve hypoplasia an...
BACKGROUND & AIMS Levels of bile acid metabolic enzymes and membrane transporters have been reported to change in cholestasis. These alterations (e.g. CYP7A1 repression and MRP4 induction) are thought to be adaptive responses that attenuate cholestatic liver injury. However, the molecular mechanisms of these adaptive responses in human obstructive cholestasis due to gallstone biliary obstructio...
BACKGROUND Bile duct ligation (BDL) is shown to induce cholestasis-related liver function impairments as well as consequent cognitive dysfunctions (i.e. impaired learning and memory formation). Glutamatergic neurotransmission plays an important role in hippocampal modulation of learning and memory function. The present study aimed to investigate the possible involvement of dorsal hippocampal (C...
McDonnell et al. [1], is a rare colonoscopic finding, with only a few articles published in the literature. The patients in these reports have been predominantly female and the finding has been commonly associated with collagenous colitis or diversion colitis. The main proposed causative mechanism is barotrauma [1–3], and until now, the sign has been considered to be a manifestation of certain ...
