The shape and form of protozoan parasites are inextricably linked to their pathogenicity. The evolutionary pressure associated with establishing and maintaining an infection and transmission to vector or host has shaped parasite morphology. However, there is not a 'one size fits all' morphological solution to these different pressures, and parasites exhibit a range of different morphologies, re...

The diagnosis of human cutaneous leishmaniasis in small towns is sometimes made without the species identification of the Leishmania, even in areas without previous epidemiological surveys. Here we report the isolation of a Leishmania strain from a patient of Rincão, state of São Paulo, that was identified by isoenzyme characterization as L. (Viannia) braziliensis. Sand fly collections were mad...

PCR-based approaches targeting kinetoplast DNA were evaluated for the diagnosis of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in regions of endemicity in northeastern Brazil. A total of 119 cutaneous biopsy specimens from patients with ACL and nonleishmaniasis cutaneous lesions were studied. Two PCR-based systems were used; one was specific for the subgenus Viannia, and the other was specific for t...

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. The mechanisms of pathogen control have been established primarily in the mouse model of Leishmania major infection, but they might not hold true for other Leishmania species associated with cutaneous disease. Here, we analyzed the role of cytokines, signaling components, and effector molecules in the control of N...

Leishmania donovani chagasi parasites, transmitted by sandflies of the Lutzomyia longipalpis species complex, normally cause visceral leishmaniasis. However, in Central America infections frequently result in cutaneous disease. We undertook experiments to investigate the possible influence of sandfly saliva on the course of infection. Erythemas caused by feeding sandflies correlated well with t...

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in the Middle Eastern countries. New cases are emerging in areas previously free of the disease. In Jordan, the diagnosis of cases during the 1960s and 1970s was mainly reported in military hospitals in Amman. Endemicity of the disease was ascertained after reporting a total of 524 cases during 1973-1978. RESULTS: Leishmania major and Leishman...

Following an epidemiological survey of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniosis (ZCL) in some villages of Badrood, a rural district north of the city of Natanz, central Iran, Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus ) papatasi Scopoli were found to be naturally infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) major zymodeme MON-26. Sandflies were collected and dissected biweekly from rodent burrows during sandfly season, Ap...

J Travel Med 2004; 11:328–330. Leishmaniasis represents a diverse group of diseases caused by protozoan parasites that are transmitted to humans by the bite of phlebotomine sandflies. Three major clinical forms can be recognized, visceral, cutaneous and mucocutaneous, which are widespread in tropical, subtropical and temperate areas.1 Data on the incidence of cutaneous leishmaniasis in travelers ...

We report for the first time the successful use of fluconazole to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania braziliensis. We used escalating doses from 5 to 8 mg/kg per day. At a dose of 5 mg/kg per day, 75% patients were cured, and at 8 mg/kg per day, the cure rate was 100%. Fluconazole was well tolerated.

We report the presence of the competent vector for Leishmania spp, Migonemyia migonei, and the Evandromyia cortelezzii-sallesi complex south of its known distribution in the central temperate region of Argentina, in the province of Córdoba. The persistence of this phlebotomine in the northern border of the province, its association with a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis, and the new record in t...
