Introduction: The OMEGA instrument onboard Mars Express has obtained several nadir observations of the surface of Mars at the boundary between day and night (the “terminator”) since early 2004. Even under clear atmospheric conditions, the path length of photons in the aerosols layer is high for such observations. In the dayside, almost all solar photons heading toward the surface are stopped by...

the anxiolytic effect of the flower of echium. amoenum was shown in several experimental studies in mice. the present study was aimed to determine whether tolerance develops to anxiolytic action of e. amoenum in mice. nmri male mice were injected intraperitoneal with hydroalcoholic extract (12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg) or saline once each day (8 am) for period of 7 days and then tested on light/dark ...

results the results show the artificial lighting obtained by difference methods of the overall lighting from natural lighting in closed blinds mode equal to 266 lux and night lighting 283.5 lux that they have no significant differences with each other (p = 0.269). as well as the illumination intensity obtained from a standard grid method is 283.5 lux and illumination intensity based on luminair...

PURPOSE Microglial cells, which are activated and recruited by chemokines, have been shown to play crucial roles in neuronal degenerations of the central nervous system (CNS). This study investigated the activation and migration of retinal microglial cells and expression of chemokines in retinas in light-induced photoreceptor degeneration in mice. METHODS Ninety-five Balb/cJ mice were kept in...

The effect of 3 months exposure to short day length (L:D, 9:15) on spermatogenesis in R. cyanophlyctis was studied. There was no difference in the qualitative and quantitative aspect of spermatogenesis between control frogs exposed to ambient photoperiod (L:D, 12.16:11.44) and frogs exposed to short day light. The present findings indicate that light has no role in spermatogenesis in the frog.

OBJECTIVE Circadian timing affects sleep onset. Delayed sleep onset can reduce sleep duration in adolescents required to awake early for a fixed school schedule. The absence of short-wavelength ("blue") morning light, which helps entrain the circadian system, can hypothetically delay sleep onset and decrease sleep duration in adolescents. The goal of this study was to investigate whether remova...

Shifts in spectral distribution of light were determined within and below a canopy of field-grown burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Burley 21). The leaves transmitted much far red light relative to red and blue light. Thus, shaded leaves received more far red light, relative to red and blue, than was received by unshaded leaves. Under field conditions, tobacco plants within rows grew tal...

BACKGROUND The objectives of this work were to study the association of maternal smoking habits with stillbirths, abortions, neonatal deaths, birth weights, placental weights and the outcomes on the 28(th) day of life. METHODS A questionnaire was developed and completed with the hospitals' recorded data collected over a period of 5 years from 47,000 babies born in several hospitals in Ontario...

Red and far red light distinctly influence the initial phytochrome-mediated phase of cold acclimation in red-osier dogwood (Cornus stolonifera). Under controlled conditions, short days and end-of-day far red light exposure after long days promote growth cessation, cold acclimation, and subsequent cold hardening of dogwood stems in response to low temperature. Nuclear magnetic resonance absorpti...

Previous studies showed that monochromatic green light stimuli during embryogenesis accelerated posthatch body weight (BW) and pectoral muscle growth of broilers. In this experiment, we further investigated the morphological and molecular basis of this phenomenon. Fertile broiler eggs (Arbor Acres, n=880) were pre-weighed and randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 incubation treatment groups: (1) dark...
