Carboxysomes were isolated from Nitrobacter winogradskyi and Nitrobacter agilis. The icosahedral particles contained double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). In the presence of ethidium bromide and cesium chloride, the particle-bound DNA had a buoyant density of rho 25 = 1.701 g/cm3. Electron microscopy revealed the DNA to be a 14-micron circular molecule.

These enzymes (Grav, 1967) are responsible for the synthesis of the monomeric precursors of DNA, namely dATP, dCTP, dGTP and dTTP. Fluctuations in the activities of some of the enzymes and in the intracellular deoxyribonucleotide pools are known to occur throughout the cell cycle (Grav, 1967; Nordenskjold et al., 1970; Adams et al., 1971 ; Skoog & Nordenskjold, 1971). Moreover, there is inducti...

Determination of deoxyribonucleotide sequence in a deoxyribonucleic acid molecule is important from both the chemical and genetic points of view. It is also essential for answering the question of whether DNA synthesized in vitro by polymerase (1, 2) is a faithful copy of the nucleotidel sequence of the primer DNA. Although enzymatically synthesized DNA has the same over-all nucleotide composit...

have been prepared and studied for possible incorporation into polynucleotides. Arab inosylcytosine mono-, di-, and triphosphates were synthesized by both chemical and enzymatic methods. Labeled and unlabeled arabinosylcytosine nucleotides were tested for their capacity to serve as substrates for purified polynucleotide phosphorylase, deoxyribonucleic acid-dependent ribonucleic acid polymerase,...

Mustard gas [di-(2-chloroethyl) sulphide] and analogous alkylating agents produce a wide range of biological effects (cf. review by Boyland, 1948). Some ofthese effects, such as induction ofmutations (Auerbach & Robson, 1946) and interference with mitosis and chromosome breakage (Darlington & Koller, 1947), stimulated interest in the reactions of alkylating agents with deoxyribonucleic acid. Pr...

The Escherichia coli uvrB gene, located on a 1.5-megadalton EcoRI (fragment F, derived from transducing phage lambda b2att2 [lambda b2cI857intam6 delta (bioAB)bio-FCD+uvrB+], has been cloned in the unique EcoRI site of several "relaxed" plasmids, i.e., pMB9, pBR322, and pBH20 (= ;BR322, including the lac regulatory elements [K. Hydroxamic acids demonstrated mutagenic and antibacterial activities. These activities appear to be dependent on the hydroxamic acid function and are probably due to the interaction with deoxyribonucleic acid.
