Pricing a product is one of the most important decisions an organization can make. Marketing research has developed several different approaches to price optimization. They include direct methods such as estimation of willingness to pay, indirect methods such as Gabor-Granger and van Westendorp techniques, and product/price mix methods such as various discrete choice models. All of them are wid...

I measure the benefit to households of the 1992 Cable Act in light of strategic responses by cable systems to the regulations mandated by the act. A discrete-choice differentiatedproduct model of household demand for all offered cable television services forms the basis of the analysis. Aggregation over households and service combinations to the level of the data permits estimation on a cross-s...

We show that a large class of discrete choice models which contain the Markov chain model introduced by Blanchet, Gallego, and Goyal (2013) belong to the class of discrete choice models based on random utility. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Pronunciation variation is extremely widespread and one of the reasons for recognition errors. In this paper we explore how similar-recognized-words can be used to construct or expand more accurate grammars in a specific domain. The domain that serves as framework for this research is the assessment of depression. Assessment of depression is done via a system that verbally administers a discret...

Binary choice sample selection models are widely used in applied economics with large crosssectional data where heteroscedaticity is typically a serious concern. Existing parametric and semiparametric estimators for the binary selection equation and the outcome equation in such models su®er from serious drawbacks in the presence of heteroscedasticity of unknown form in the latent errors. In thi...

Welfare, Labor Supply and Heterogeneous Preferences: Evidence for Europe and the US Following the report of the Stiglitz Commission, measuring and comparing well-being across countries has gained renewed interest. Yet, analyses that go beyond income and incorporate non-market dimensions of welfare most often rely on the assumption of identical preferences to avoid the difficulties related to in...

We show that in a unit demand discrete choice framework with at least three goods, demand cannot be additively separable in own price. This result sharpens the analogous result of Jaffe and Weyl (2010) in the case of linear demand and has implications for testing of the discrete choice assumption, out-of-sample predictions, and welfare analysis.

Background The management of foot problems in JIA is complex and requires a multidisciplinary health professional input. However little is known about patients’ and parents’ preferences for attributes of foot care. Incorporating individuals’ preferences into future foot-care provision may improve satisfaction, treatment adherence, and thus clinical efficacy. The aim of this study was to compare...

This paper investigates the application of a nested logit model to urban transit networks where every set of competitive transit lines is described by a particular graph structure called hyperpath. It shows that the nested logit model transcends the inherent limitations of the simple logit model while retaining the algorithmic advantages similar to that obtained with the ordinary logit model fo...
