We used the Continuous Wave Scanning Acoustic Microscope to characterize thin film materials. The measurement of the dispersion curve of surface waves and the inversion of this dispersion equation relation, allow to determine the elastic constants, the density or the thickness of a thin layer on a substrate. Besides, it is possible to have qualitative information on the adhesion properties of t...

To investigate and understand basic properties of non-radial solar p-modes with high wave numbers l, it is sufficient to consider only the outer layers of the sun. As an atmosphere, the upper part of the convection zone may be approximated by a plane layer with constant gravity. A simple standard model is a polytropic convection zone with an overlying isothermal atmosphere. In this case, the ad...

A study is made of the propagation of time-harmonic magneto-thermoviscoelastic plane waves in a homogeneous electrically conducting viscoelastic medium of Kelvin-Voigt type permeated by a primary uniform external magnetic field when the entire medium rotates with a uniform angular velocity. The generalized thermoelasticity theory of type II (Green and Naghdi model) is used to study the propagat...

The dispersion equation is analyzed for waves in a strongly magnetized, electron-positron plasma in which counterstreaming electrons are cold in their respective rest frames. For propagation parallel to the magnetic field the dispersion equation factorizes into equations for two longitudinal modes and four transverse modes. Instabilities occur in both longitudinal and transverse modes, with the...

We describe the continuous time random walk (CTRW) MATLAB toolbox, a collection of MATLAB scripts and functions that compute breakthrough curves (BTCs) and one-dimensional/two-dimensional (1D/2D) resident concentration profiles for passive tracer dispersion. The transport model is based on the CTRW theory. CTRW includes as special cases the classical Fickian dispersion based advection-dispersio...

Self-similarity is a ubiquitous concept in the physical sciences used to explain a wide range of spatialor temporal-structures observed in a broad range of applications and natural phenomena. Indeed, they have been predicted or observed in the context of Raman scattering, spatial soliton fractals, propagation in the normal dispersion regime with strong nonlinearity, optical amplifiers, and mode...

The modulational instability of the higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with fourth-order dispersion and quintic nonlinear terms, describing the propagation of extremely short pulses, is investigated. Several types of gains by modulational instability are shown to exist in both the anomalous and normal dispersion regimes depending on the sign and strength of the higher-order nonlinear t...

A time-delayed second-order approximation for the front speed in reaction-dispersion systems was obtained by Fort and Méndez [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 867 (1999)]. Here we show that taking proper care of the effect of the time delay on the reactive process yields a different evolution equation and, therefore, an alternate equation for the front speed. We apply the new equation to the Neolithic tran...

We discuss the propagation of nonlinear optical pulses in fibers. The wave equation is solved taking the radial dependence in an average way. The radius versus wavelength curves for "no dispersion" in SiO(2) glass are calculated and plotted. These no-dispersion curves separate the regions of light and dark solitons supported by the fibers.

We demonstrate that families of vortex solitons are possible in a bidispersive three-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation. These solutions can be considered as extensions of two-dimensional dark vortex solitons which, along the third dimension, remain localized due to the interplay between dispersion and nonlinearity. Such vortex solitons can be observed in optical media with normal dispe...
