The amount of information available to the mathematics teacher is so enormous that the selection of desirable content is gradually becoming a huge task in itself. With respect to the inclusion of elements of history of mathematics in mathematics instruction, the era of Big Data introduces a high likelihood of Recency Bias, a hitherto unconnected challenge for stakeholders in mathematics educati...
This article introduces a qualitative research method called discourse tracing. Discourse tracing draws from contributions made by ethnographers, discourse critics, case study scholars, and process tracers. The approach offers new insights and an attendant language about how we engage in research designed specifically for the critical-interpretive and applied analysis of discourse. More specifi...
In this paper, we present preliminary work on corpus-based anaphora resolution of discourse deixis in German. Our annotation guidelines provide linguistic tests for locating the antecedent, and for determining the semantic types of both the antecedent and the anaphor. The corpus consists of selected speaker turns from the Europarl corpus.
The INTERNIST system, which is a computerbased diagnostic problem solver having Internal Medicine as i t s domain of discourse, employs a novel attention focusing heurist ic in order to deal sequentially with the component parts of a complex c l in ica l problem. The strategy of sequential problem formation and solution has proved to be effect ive in sorting out the complexi t ies and rendering...
Research has shown that large IT programmes in e-government and e-health are challenging not only in terms of project failures and in terms of high costs, but also that the public and sectorial discourses greatly influences the trajectories and outcomes of mega-programmes. However, few IS studies have investigated this phenomenon in much depth, and the aim of this contribution is to shed more l...
This paper describes the discourse parsing system developed at Dublin City University for participation in the CoNLL 2015 shared task. We participated in two tasks: a connective and argument identification task and a sense classification task. This paper focuses on the latter task and especially the sense classification for implicit connectives.
I begin by sketching two views about how it is that I manage to communicate what I do by uttering (1) in an ordinary context. The first of these two views is what I call restrictionism. According to restrictionism, the explanation of how I communicate what I do is straightforward: I utter a sentence, with assertive intent, which has a truth-valuedetermining content that is precisely what I inte...
The online discussion forum (ODF) is one of the most widely used e-learning tools in open distance learning (ODL) environments. A popular line of research focuses on producing instruments that can be used to assess the level and amount of learning that takes place via transcript analysis of ODF-discourse. Of current interest is the influential community of inquiry (CoI) theoretical framework, f...
Language is given meaning through its correspondence with a world representation. This correspondence can be at multiple levels of granularity or resolutions. In this paper, we introduce an approach to multi-resolution language grounding in the extremely challenging domain of professional soccer commentaries. We define and optimize a factored objective function that allows us to leverage discou...
Representing uncertainty and reasoning with dynamically evolving systems are two related issues that are in the heart of many information systems. In this paper we show that these tasks can be successfully dealt with by incorporating distance semantics and nondeterministic matrices. The outcome is a general framework for capturing the principle of minimal change and providing a non-deterministi...
