A Response surface design of experiment has been performed based on the Muschelknautz method of modeling (MM) for 64 test cases using Box-Behnken design to study the effect of seven geometrical cyclone dimensions on the pressure drop and cut-off diameter. It is found that the most significant geometrical parameters are, the vortex finder diameter, the inlet section width and height, and the cyc...

Future climate projections show higher/lower winter (Dec-Jan-Feb) precipitation in the northern/southern Mediterranean region than in present climate conditions. This paper analyzes the results of regional model simulations of the A2 and B2 scenarios, which confirm this opposite precipitation change and link it to the change of cyclone activity. The increase of the winter cyclone activity in fu...

The issue of the relationship between the central mean sealevel pressure (Pc) and maximum mean near-surface wind* (the wind-pressure relationship, hereafter WPR) in a tropical cyclone (TC) has been the subject of ongoing debate for many decades and a number of relationships have been developed during this period. This is demonstrated by the fact that the three Australian Tropical Cyclone Warnin...

A history of architectural and process advancements has enabled Altera® Cyclone® V FPGAs to be used in numerous low-cost and low-power applications in the industrial, automotive, military, communication and consumer markets, among others. This white paper outlines a real-life PCI Express® (PCIe®) Gen1x4 reference design including a DDR3 memory controller. It shows just how effective Cyclone V F...

Cyclone is a safe dialect of C. It has been designed from the ground up to prevent the buffer overflows, format string attacks, and memory management errors that are common in C programs, while retaining C’s syntax and semantics. This paper examines safety violations enabled by C’s design, and shows how Cyclone avoids them, without giving up C’s hallmark control over low-level details such as d...

We describe results from the fifth stage of a project to build a statistical model of tropical cyclone tracks. The previous stages considered genesis and the shape of tracks. We now consider in more detail how to represent the lysis (death) of tropical cyclones. Improving the lysis model turns out to bring a significant improvement to the track model overall.

Hurricane forecasts are intended to convey information that is useful in helping individuals and organizations make decisions. For example, decisions include whether a mandatory evacuation should be issued, where emergency evacuation shelters should be located, and what are the appropriate quantities of emergency supplies that should be stockpiled at various locations. This paper incorporates o...

The purpose of this article is twofold. The first is to point out and correct several misconceptions about the putative WISHE mechanism of tropical cyclone intensification that currently are being taught to atmospheric science students, to tropical weather forecasters, and to laypeople who seek to understand how tropical cyclones intensify. The mechanism relates to the simplest problem of an in...

[1] A three-dimensional, regional coupled atmosphere-ocean model with full physics is developed to study air-sea interactions during winter storms off the U. S. east coast. Because of the scarcity of open ocean observations, models such as this offer valuable opportunities to investigate how oceanic forcing drives atmospheric circulation and vice versa. The study presented here considers condit...
