This position paper argues in favor of integrating personal response systems (PRSs) also known as audience response systems or clickers into traditional lectures to increase student engagement, participation, and achievement. Traditional lectures have been disregarded as an effective method of teaching and learning (Freisen, 2011). They are inferior in facilitating learning primarily because th...

“The verifications of Hahnemann convince those who have intellectual integrity for scientific conviction, who will not sacrifice their intellectual integrity to the idols of the day, who will repeat Hahnemann’s experimental verifications of his scientific observations and inductions as they should be repeated. Any other method than to take into the healthy body four drams of China twice a day t...

To merge multiple range data obtained by range scanners, filling holes caused by unmeasured regions, the space carving method is a simple and effective method. However, this method often fails if the number of the input range images is small, because unseen voxels that are not carved out remains in the volume area. In this paper, we propose an improved algorithm of the space carving method that...

The shocks and impacts encountered on small high-speed craft exceed the limits set for safe working practice according to current standards. European legislation regarding the exposure to vibration will have far reaching effects on the operators of such craft with respect to the safety of their employees. This paper sets out to highlight the vibration dose values that can be expected during typ...

Assume we have a dataset, Z say, from the joint distribution of random variables X and Y , and two further, independent datasets, X and Y , from the marginal distributions of X and Y , respectively. We wish to combine X , Y and Z, so as to construct an estimator of the joint density. This problem is readily solved in some parametric circumstances. For example, if the joint distribution were nor...

Learning with self-explaining examples is an effective method in well-structured domains. We analyzed this method in teaching the complex skill of argumentation. In an experiment we compared three conditions (n = 47 students of educational sciences) that differed with respect to whether and how the processing of the examples was supported by different help functions. The analysis of the video-b...

The Bayesian framework of learning from positive noise-free examples derived by Muggleton [12] is extended to learning functional hypotheses from positive examples containing normally distributed noise in the outputs. The method subsumes a type of distance based learning as a special case. We also present an effective method of outlieridentification which may significantly improve the predictiv...

We associate a group IMG(f) to every covering f of a topological space M by its open subset. It is the quotient of the fundamental group π1(M) by the intersection of the kernels of its monodromy action for the iterates fn. Every iterated monodromy group comes together with a naturally defined action on a rooted tree. We present an effective method to compute this action and show how the dynamic...

In this paper we introduce an effective method of the adult image classification via MPEG-7 descriptors. The proposed system uses MPEG-7 descriptors as the main feature of the adult image classification systems. The simulation shows that the proposed image classification system performs the 5 class classification task with success rate of above 70%.

A structure called a decision making problem is considered. The set of outcomes (consequences) is partially ordered according to the decision maker’s preferences. The problem is how these preferences affect a decision maker to prefer one of his strategies (or acts) to another, i.e. it is to describe so called derived preference relations. This problem is formalized by using category theory appr...
