BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Periprocedural embolization of debris during carotid stenting interventions may result in neurological deficit. This study was designed to evaluate in-hospital and 30-day adverse events in patients percutaneously treated for carotid artery disease with embolic protection devices. METHODS From 1999 to June 2002, a total of 442 consecutive patients underwent percutaneous ...

Given the rapid evolution and technological advances in the diagnosis and treatment of acute ischaemic stroke (AIS), including the proliferation of comprehensive stroke centres and increasing emphasis on interventional stroke therapies, the need for prompt recognition of stroke due to acute large vessel occlusion has received significant attention in the recent literature. Diffusion-weighted im...

Non-valvular atrial fibrillation is associated with a significantly increased risk of embolic stroke due to blood clot forming predominantly in the left atrial appendage (LAA). Preventive measures to avoid embolic events are permanent administration of anticoagulants or surgical closure of the LAA. Various clinical trials provide evidence about safety, effectiveness and therapeutic success of L...

We report a case of a 53-year-old man with Behcet's disease (BD) and paradoxical stroke. This patient suddenly developed sensory aphasia, right oculomotor palsy, nystagmus, and left ataxic hemiparesis. MR images showed fresh embolic infarcts in the midbrain and the left parietotemporal lobe. He presented with uveitis, oral aphthous ulcers and genital ulcers. An electrocardiogram revealed no abn...

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most common genetic cardiac disorders, with markedly heterogeneous clinical manifestations and natural history. Although stroke and systemic embolic events are known to occur as complications of HCM, few data are available on the occurrence and profile of these events in this patient population. In a previous study, stroke and systemic embolic eve...

Thrombus in transit leading to paradoxical systemic arterial embolism is a rare echocardiographic finding in patients presenting with embolic stroke. We present a case of a patient who had an atrial thrombus in transit discovered incidentally and later suffered a fatal stroke. Etiologies of cardioembolic stroke and the use of echocardiography in diagnosis and management are briefly discussed.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE There is no clear description about the patterns of each mechanism of striatocapsular infarctions. The aims of our study were to elucidate differences in the distributions of lesions of acute middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarctions involving the striatocapsular region and to compare those following embolic striatocapsular infarctions with those originating from MCA disea...
