Novel coherent detectors for DQPSK and-DQPSK on Rayleigh fading channels are presented. The detectors are based on decision feedback and minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimation. The proposed detectors may be used in both single carrier and multicarrier systems. Analytical results in form of expressions for channel estimation error variance and bit error probability, both with and wi...

We computationally investigate two approaches for uncertainty quantification in inverse problems for nonlinear parameter dependent dynamical systems. We compare the bootstrapping and asymptotic theory approaches for problems involving data with several noise forms and levels. We consider both constant variance absolute error data and relative error which produces non-constant variance data in o...

Between-day variance is an ambiguous term representing either total variance or pure between-day variance. In either case, it is often incorrectly calculated even though analysis of variance (ANOVA) and other excellent methods of estimation are available. We used statistical theory to predict the magnitude of error expected from using several intuitive approaches to estimation of variance compo...

This paper addresses estimation of linear functionals of the error distribution in nonparametric regression models. It derives an i.i.d. representation for the empirical estimator based on residuals, using undersmoothed estimators for the regression curve. Asymptotic efficiency of the estimator is proved. Estimation of the error variance is discussed in detail. In this case, undersmoothing is n...

In an amplify-and-forward cooperative network, a closed-form expression of the a priori distribution of the complex-valued gain of the global relay channel is intractable, so that a priori information is often not exploited for estimating this gain. Here, we present two iterative channel gain and noise variance estimation algorithms that make use of a priori channel information and exploit the ...

This paper introduces a method that computes an estimation of the bit error rate (BER) based on the RAKE receiver soft output only. For this method no knowledge is needed about the channel characteristics nor the precise external conditions. Simulations show that the mean error of the estimation is below 2%, with only a small variance. Implementation issues for a practical use of the method are...

A method is proposed which simplifies estimation of all parameters in the functional measurement error model with no error in the equation under the assumption that the error covariance for the explanatory variables is known and the model variance is unknown. The proposed method is shown to produce the same estimates given for the structural model in Schneeweiss (1976) and Fuller(1987) .

The problem addressed in this paper deals with the parameter estimation of in vitro uptake kinetics of drugs into living cells in presence of timing noise. Effects of the timing noise on the bias and variance of the output error are explicitly determined. A bounded-error parameter estimation approach is proposed as a suited solution to handle this problem. Application results are presented whic...

The restricted maximum likelihood is preferred by many to the full maximum likelihood for estimation with variance component and other random coefficient models, because the variance estimator is unbiased. It is shown that this unbiasedness is accompanied in some balanced designs by an inflation of the mean squared error. An estimator of the cluster-level variance that is uniformly more efficie...
