By KENJUIO ITO AND KURT R. REISSMANN T HE ABSENCE of protein from the food of rats results within a few (lays in a depression of red cell formation, and the latter proceeds during the first 4 dietary weeks at approximately one-tenth of its normal rate.1 If protein starvation is continued, a gradual recovery of erythropoiesis is noted, and the red cell mass tends to stabilize around one-half of ...

BACKGROUND The induction of tumor angiogenesis, a pathologic process critical for tumor progression, is mediated by multiple regulatory factors released by tumor and host cells. We investigated the role of the hematopoietic cytokine erythropoietin as an angiogenic factor that modulates tumor progression. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Fluorescently-labeled rodent mammary carcinoma cells were ...

Despite improved survival, many preterm infants undergo subsequent neurodevelopmental impairment. To date, no neuroprotective therapies have been implemented into clinical practice. Erythropoietin, a haematopoietic cytokine used for treatment of anaemia of prematurity, has been shown to have neuroprotective and neuroregenerative effects on the brain in many experimental studies. The aim of the ...

Anemia is one of the most serious complications in patients on dialysis. Erythropoietin improves the anemia. However, erythropoietin resistance is sometimes encountered from causes such as functional iron deficiency, secondary hyperparathyroidism, blood loss, or interaction with other drugs. To clarify the interaction between erythropoietin and the renin-angiotensin system, we studied the maint...

The effects of erythropoietin on osteoblasts and bone formation are controversial. Since patients with myelodysplastic syndromes often display excessively high erythropoietin levels, we aimed to analyze the effect of erythropoietin on osteoblast function in myelodysplastic syndromes and define the role of Wnt signaling in this process. Expression of osteoblast-specific genes and subsequent oste...

Significant increases in the serum erythropoietin of male rats occur after the end of a brief hypoxic exposure. These increases in the hormone are almost completely abolished when the kidneys are removed after the hypoxic exposure. Injection of puromycin or cycloheximide after the hypoxic exposure significantly decreases the subseauent increases in serum erythropoietin titers, whereas injection...

AIM To study correlation between concentration of pathological cytokines and erythropoietin inpatients with chronic heart failure anemic syndrome and also to prove importance of this communication for need of appointment erythropoietin excitants. PATIENTS AND METHODS 94 patients with chronic heart failure of New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III-IV a left ventricular ejection fraction o...

Among 199 patients treated with thalidomide for multiple myeloma, four thromboses occurred in 49 cases during erythropoietin therapy (prevalence 8.1%; annual rate 7.25%), and another 14 events occurred in patients not on erythropoietin (9.3%; 7.56%). Thus, erythropoietin would seem not to increase the risk of thrombosis of myeloma patients receiving thalidomide.

Eight patients with obstructive sleep apnoea and a normal haemoglobin concentration underwent nocturnal studies during which oxyhaemoglobin saturation was recorded continuously with an ear oximeter and serum erythropoietin concentration was measured hourly by means of a radioimmunoassay. Serum erythropoietin concentrations remained within the normal range throughout the study despite falls in o...
