BACKGROUND Intracapsular femoral neck fractures are associated with high rates of nonunion. We aimed to identify risk factors for nonunion in patients with both displaced and nondisplaced intracapsular femoral neck fractures treated with three 7-mm parallel cannulated screws, placed in either a triangle or an inverted triangle configuration, using failure of fixation as the primary outcome. M...
RESURFACING HIP ARTHROPLASTY +*Hananouchi, T; *Sugano, N; *Nishii, T; *Sakai, T; **Miki, H;**Lee, SB; **Ohzono, K; *Yoshikawa, H +*Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine [email protected] Introduction: Metal on metal resurfacing hip arthroplasty (RHA) has been getting popularity due to its concept of bone conservation, stability, and expected longevi...
This review considers methods used to quantify lag screw placement within the femoral head following proximal femoral fracture. Implants used for fixation of femoral neck fractures can lead to unwanted outcomes in some patients. Cutting out of the screw within the femoral head has been shown to be the commonest cause of failure and is related to lag screw placement within the femur. Until now, ...
This article describes 2 cases of osteochondroma emanating from the posterior aspect of the femoral neck with a fracture at the base of its stalk caused by impingement between the tumor and the ischium. A 44-year-old man and a 57-year-old man presented with left hip pain. Radiographs revealed a mass at the posterior aspect of the femoral neck. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging ...
BACKGROUND Hip dislocation after arthroplasty for femoral neck fractures remains a serious complication. The aim of our study was to investigate the dislocation rate in acute femoral neck fracture patients operated with a posterior approach with cemented conventional or dual articulation acetabular components. METHODS We compared the dislocation rate in 56 consecutive patients operated with c...
Hip resurfacing is a popular treatment for osteoarthritis in young, active patients. Previous studies have shown that occasional failures--femoral neck fracture and implant loosening, possibly associated with bone adaptation--are affected by prosthesis sizing and positioning, in addition to patient and surgical factors. With the aim of improving tolerance to surgical variation, finite element m...
The results of meta-analysis show a revision rate of 33% for internal fixation of displaced fractures of the femoral neck, mostly because of nonunion. Osteopenia and osteoporosis are highly prevalent in elderly patients. Bone density has been shown to correlate with the intrinsic stability of the fixation of the fracture in cadaver and retrospective studies. We aimed to confirm or refute this f...
We describe a patient who sustained a peri-prosthetic fracture of the femoral neck two weeks after undergoing a resurfacing procedure for osteoarthritis of the hip. The fracture was minimally displaced and a satisfactory outcome was obtained following conservative treatment.
