In vitro DNA inversion mediated by the protein Hin requires the presence of a recombinational enhancer sequence located in cis relative to the recombination sites and a protein, Fis, which binds to the enhancer. We have cloned and determined the primary sequence of the gene encoding Fis. The deduced amino acid sequence of Fis indicates that the protein is 98 amino acids long and contains a pote...

The Escherichia coli FIS (factor for inversion stimulation) protein has been implicated in assisting bacteriophage Mu repressor, c, in maintaining the lysogenic state under certain conditions. In a fis strain, a temperature-inducible Mucts62 prophage is induced at lower temperatures than in a wild-type host (M. Bétermier, V. Lefrère, C. Koch, R. Alazard, and M. Chandler, Mol. Microbiol. 3:459-4...

The conventional shape-from-focus (SFF) methods have inaccuracies because of piecewise constant approximation of the focused image surface (FIS). We propose a scheme for SFF based on representation of three-dimensional (3-D) FIS in terms of neural network weights. The neural networks are trained to learn the shape of the FIS that maximizes the focus measure.

The Escherichia coli K-12 nir operon promoter can be fully activated by binding of the regulator of fumarate and nitrate reduction (FNR) to a site centered at position -41.5 upstream of the transcript start, and this activation is modulated by upstream binding of the integration host factor (IHF) and Fis (factor for inversion stimulation) proteins. Thus, transcription initiation is repressed by...

The bacterial nucleoid-associated protein Fis regulates diverse reactions by bending DNA and through DNA-dependent interactions with other control proteins and enzymes. In addition to dynamic nonspecific binding to DNA, Fis forms stable complexes with DNA segments that share little sequence conservation. Here we report the first crystal structures of Fis bound to high- and low-affinity 27-base-...

BACKGROUND Acute first-ever ischemic stroke (FIS) is a heterogeneous, polygenic disorder. The contribution of vascular genetic variants as inherited causes of ischemic stroke has remained controversial. AIM To examine the association of genetic variants in vascular factors with the occurrence of FIS. MATERIAL AND METHODS The current research was performed in a group of 39 patients with FIS ...

Recent studies strongly suggest that in bacterial cells the order of genes along the chromosomal origin-to-terminus axis is determinative for regulation of the growth phase-dependent gene expression. The prediction from this observation is that positional displacement of pleiotropic genes will affect the genetic regulation and hence, the cellular phenotype. To test this prediction we inserted t...

The leuV operon of Escherichia coli encodes three of the four genes for the tRNA1Leu isoacceptors. Transcription from this and other stable RNA promoters is known to be affected by a cis-acting UP element and by Fis protein interactions with the carboxyl-terminal domain of the alpha-subunits of RNA polymerase. In this report, we suggest that transcription from the leuV promoter also is activate...

A genetic strategy to enhance recombinant protein production is discussed. A small DNA bending protein, Fis, which has been shown to activate rRNA synthesis upon a nutrient upshift, was overexpressed in E. coli strain W3110 carrying vector pUCR1. Overexpression of Fis during exponential growth was shown to activate rrn promoters to different extents. A 5-fold improvement in chloramphenicol acet...
