Our recent efforts focusing on improving the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) are introduced, including an incompressible LB model without compressible effect, a flexible thermal LBM with simple structure for Bousinesq fluids, and a robust boundary scheme. We use them to simulate the lid-driven cavity flow at Reynolds numbers 5000–50000, the natural convection due to internal heat generation in a...

This paper introduces for the first time the control of a fluid flow using visual servoing. The control consists to regulate a flow around a desired velocities profile. The originality here is the possibility to use optical flow measurements, computed from the observed flow, in a visual servo control scheme. Compared to existing approaches that uses a limited set of measurements to control a fl...

We explain the construction of some solutions of the Stokes system with a given set of singular points, in the sense of Caffarelli, Kohn and Nirenberg [1]. By means of a partial regularity theorem (proved elsewhere), it turns out that we are able to show the existence of a suitable weak solution to the Navier-Stokes equations with a singular set of positive one dimensional Hausdorff measure.

Determining the correct matching boundary condition is fundamental to our understanding of several everyday problems. Despite over a century of scientific work, existing velocity boundary conditions are unable to consistently explain and capture the complete physics associated with certain common but complex problems, such as moving contact lines and corner flows. The widely used Maxwell and Na...

Abstract: The level set method for compressible flows [13] is simple to implement, especially in the presence of topological changes. However, this method was shown to suffer from large spurious oscillations in [11]. In [4], a new Ghost Fluid Method (GFM) was shown to remove these spurious oscillations by minimizing the numerical smearing in the entropy field with the help of an Isobaric Fix [6...

The method of lattice boltzmann equation(LBE) is a kinetic-based approach for fluid flow computations. In the last decade, minimal kinetic models, and primarily the LBE, have met with significant success in the simulation of complex hydrodynamic phenomena, ranging from slow flows in grossly irregular geometries to fully developed turbulence, to flow with dynamic phase transitions. In the presen...

Nowadays, various numerical methods are developed to extend computational fluid dynamics in engineering applications. One of the most useful methods in free surface modeling is Boundary Element Method (BEM). BEM is used to model inviscid fluid flow such as flow around ships. BEM solutions employ surface mesh at all of the boundaries. In order to model the linear free surface, BEM can be modifie...

We study a depth-averaged model of gravity-driven flows made of solid grains and fluid, moving over variable basal surface. In particular, we are interested in applications to geophysical flows such as avalanches and debris flows, which typically contain both solid material and interstitial fluid. The model system consists of mass and momentum balance equations for the solid and fluid component...

Gravity or buoyancy plays an important role in atmospheric and geophysical flows. The flow is destabilized when heavier or colder fluid is on top of a lighter or hotter fluid, often seen in thermal convection (Fig 1(a)). Convection plays an important role in interiors of many planets and stars, and it is one of the mechanisms for the generation of a magnetic field. Conversely, the flow is stabi...

In this paper we consider a stochastic model describing the varying number of flows in a network. This model features flows of two types, namely file transfers (with fixed volume) and streaming traffic (with fixed duration), and extends the model of Key, Massoulié, Bain and Kelly [27] by allowing more general bandwidth allocation criteria. We analyse the dynamics of the system under a fluid sca...
