The title compound, dimethyl 10b'-(4-fluorostyryl)-8',9'-dimethoxy-4-nitro-5',6'-dihydrospiro[9H-fluorene-9,1'(10b'H)-pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline]-2',3'-dicarboxylate, C38H31FN2O8, is a new photochromic tetrahydroindolizine. One of the C-C bonds at the spiro C atom is very long [1.630 (2) A], thus explaining the photochromic behaviour.
In this study, the effects of exposure to pyrene, fluorene and a mixture of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) upon branchial Na (+)/K (+)-ATPase was investigated in juvenile seabream Sparus aurata in a 96 h in vivo experiment. No significant effect was found, and thus it was concluded that branchial Na(+)/K (+)-ATPase is probably not affected by PAH.
The solution-processable small molecules based on carbazole or fluorene containing rhodanine dyes at both ends were synthesized and introduced as acceptors in organic photovoltaic cells. The high energy levels of their lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals resulted in a power conversion efficiency of 3.08% and an open circuit voltage of up to 1.03 V.
The isomers of xylene have been separated by enclathration using three host compounds: 9,9'-bianthryl (H1), 9,9'-spirobifluorene (H2) and trans-2,3-dibenzoylspiro[cyclopropane-1,9-fluorene] (H3). The structures of each host with a single xylene isomer have been elucidated and, for H1, the relative lattice energies of the clathrates with ortho- and para-xylene have been evaluated.

We report the synthesis, X-ray crystal structures and photophysics of new donor-acceptor oligomers of fluorene (F) and dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide (S) with constrained dihedral angles in the backbone. The materials display bright deep-blue fluorescence and evidence is presented for a planarised intramolecular charge-transfer (PICT) state in the F-S systems.
A new alternating copolymer of fluorene and naphthalene diimide, PF-NDI, was synthesized and characterized. The highest power conversion efficiency of all-polymer solar cells based on P3HT:PF-NDI reached 1.63% with a relatively high fill factor of 0.66 by using 1,8-diiodooctane as a solvent additive to optimize the mixing morphology.
We report in this paper an interesting tandem reaction involving sequential palladium(0)-catalyzed decarboxylation of diynylic carbonates, intramolecular nucleophilic cyclization and Schmittel reaction, which provides a facile method for the synthesis of a variety of polycyclic benzo[b]fluorene derivatives from easily accessible starting materials.
